Westminster is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Frederick, MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westminster was founded by German settlers in 1751 as Westminister Township. In 1871 it became an independent municipality and retained its autonomy until 1959 when it became a part of the newly created Montgomery County. The townships of Catonsville and Bowie were annexed to Westminster in 1957 and 1965 respectively. The first settler in what would become Westminster was Johann Gottfried Hecht fromGermany who arrived on July 8th, 1751. He called his new settlement “Westminster” after his home town in Germany where he had been born some years earlier. Hecht married Anne Johnson from Cecil County, Maryland on September 6th, 1753 and they settled down near present day Catonsville Avenue and North Spring Street. They had six children: John (1754-1821), Wilhelm (1757-1835), Anna (1759-1842), Friedrich (1762-1836), Catharine Mrs Hecht Kappe(1765-1841)and Christiana Mrs Hecht Kappe(1767-1858). Johann Gottfried bore three more children before his death on October 15th, 1785 at age 48/49: Augustinus (1800s?), Mathilde Elizabeth Angelica Helene Schönborn(1800s?), and Nicolas van der Velde Augustus Johannes Cornelis Elias de la Rey(1800s?). By 1801 there were 102 people living in Westminister Township with 20 farms under cultivation yielding $2 per acre payable to the township treasurer annually plus 1¢ for each bushel grown above average. In 1871, when Montgomery County was created from parts of Prince George's and Baltimore Counties, Westminster became one of its initial municipalities located within its borders which included all of Catonsville Township as well as Bowie Township east of Interstate 95 between US 301 & US Capitol Boulevard & south of I‑95 between US 301 & US 14th Street including present day areas around North Spring Street & Park Avenue After centuries as an agricultural enclave surrounded by rural farmland along two major arteries - MdRoute 97 north to Frederick then west to Washington - commercial development began to take hold throughout much of Prince George's County with industries such as brewing beer or flour becoming important employers throughout the late 19th century with many residents becoming involved with local politics serving various positions including mayor or even county commissioner during this time period culminating in WWI when many residents enlisted service alongside their brothers and sisters across Canada Electrification began arriving into communities like Westminster through electrical wires brought over by railroads in the early 1920s followed by telephone lines arriving during World War II With industry waning during WWII but continuing into the postwar era through large engineering projects such as expanding Interstate 95southward from Frederick past Laurelhurst Cemetery towards Owings Mills&southwest along I‑95 past Gaithersburgto form National Highway System - portions of Northern Montgomery County transitioned into suburban neighborhoods characterized today by high concentrations Urban sprawl while southern parts retain more rural character characterized today by small businesses . A number Federal agencies have their headquarters located within easy reachof downtown Bethesda resulting in increased population density DowntownOver time Downtown has undergone several incarnations reflecting changes associated with government work., most notably service expansions that include a police department; new embassies; new courthouse; modern city planning that includes an expansive central business district extending beyond 4 blocks off I‑95&Washington Streets ; massive expansion project led by Mayor Andy Beall resulting in community revitalization including a popular wide variety Of cultural attractions making Downtown one stopover for visitors looking for everythingfrom history to nightlife

Westminster was an early English settlement on the Potomac River in what is now Maryland. The town grew rapidly during the Province of Maryland's colonial period, reaching its peak by 1692. It became a part of Virginia after that colony's establishment in 1776. As a result of the American Revolution, Westminster became one of the most important British settlements in North America. After the war, it declined rapidly and fell into disrepair. However, in 1871 it was restored as a municipal borough under the name of Westminster City and remains so today. The town's origins can be traced back to 1447 when Sir John Smith erected a trading post at Westminster Bridge over the Potomac River. From this location, he traded with Native Americans, Europeans and other Native Americans for goods such as arrowheads and tobacco products. In 1536, Queen Catherine Parr granted land at Westminster to Thomas Waterhouse for his use as a market garden between Georgetown (now Arlington) and Silver Spring (now Hyattsville). This market garden served as an important center for trade throughout much of Colonial Maryland because there were no other stores or markets open to farmers near civilian areas outside of Baltimore and Washington D.C.. In 1692, while serving as lieutenant colonel in Fairfax County’s militia regiment against Bostonians during King Philip’s War (the first phase of our nation’s revolutionary struggle), Iredell Parishioner purchased two acres on which he erected a log cabin near what is now known as Monument Hill Park – home to many local families until recent times; thus beginning what would become my parishioner tenure at this site next door to Stonington Presbyterian Church from about 1692-1712 –almost half a century ago! He named his new property “Westminster” after Parliament House built nearby on Palace Road – then still within King George II’s original district boundaries!! In fact this spot where we stand today justnorthwest cornerof Monument Hill Blvd., directly across from Stonington Presbyterian Church has been here since before Prince George even started school hereabouts .. southerly side towards riverview Dr., thence northerly side including current monument buildings facing east across street; lots here were all purchase by Iredell Parishioner less than 1 year old! So it may have been bought by him 1st week of Mar/Apr 1692 !! After that date 3rd house NW corner 2nd story @ present site

The name Westminster came from Westminster Abbey, which served as their religious center. The town declined in popularity after 1800, but it regained some popularity during the American Revolution because of its close proximity to Baltimore and its role as a munitions factory. After the Revolution, Westminster became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1881, it merged with neighboring New Carrollton to form a new city called Baltimore.
