Westminster is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 26,553 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baltimore–Washington Metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in what would become Westminster were two families from Wales who arrived in 1683; they named their new settlement "Bridgewater." In 1795, the Potomac River was bridged and settlement began on land that now includes much of downtown Bethesda. A fire destroyed most of one of these early settlements in 1814 and again in 1827; however, development continued apace thanks to the general availability of lumber and other resources that allowed for more than doubling of the town's population by 1830. By 1860, Westminster had reached its present size with 2,500 residents. In 1868, Frederick Douglass moved from Baltimore to Westminster as part of his anti-slavery agitation. He became an effective advocate for black rights here and remains an important figure in Whoopie Hill today. The Douglass House still stands as a museum celebrating African American history in Westminstertowne (now known as Mount Vernon). In 1888, Queen Victoria visited Westminster during her visit to America and made a giftof £5 million sterling (equivalent to $100 million today) to be used for educational purposes throughout North America including funds for building new schools and libraries throughout the continent – making it one of her largest gifts ever given away by Britain. During World War II there was production at nearby Johns Hopkins University which led to increased growth around Wembley stadium where people could watch training exercises or concerts while living close by. After the war there was less commercial activity but more residential development which brought about further growth until 1990 when declining populations forced some businesses out onto Market Street where they remain today - once again bringing about renewed commercial activity along Elm Road/Woodward Boulevard north east of Center Park Drive (formerly called Race Street). In recent years there have been several efforts underway to revitalize downtown – with plans currently under way for a high-rise hotel/tower complex on West Pratt Street adjacent to Main Library/Museum which will also include retail space on top and create new opportunities for summertime recreation near Laurel Hall Pond - all aimed at creating more vibrancy and vitality within this increasingly gentrified community center located within walking distance both from many restaurants and bars as well as plenty of public transportation options should visitors need or want them (and parking is available on site). Finally, with increasing concerns over global warming rates predictions call for even more green space open up within reach especially if downtown becomes too gridlocked due largely to sprawl along Route 1 south west into Northwest Baltimore - opening up possibilities not only for expanded businesses but also greater pedestrian accessability from all directions!
In the late 18th century, Westminster was a small town in Prince George's County, Md. It was first settled by English colonists in 1751 and became a county seat in 1784. The town was burned down by Native Americans on multiple occasions during the early years of its existence, but it regained its importance as a commercial center after being connected to Baltimore by wagon road. In 1814, Westminster became part of the newly formed Baltimore District and later became part of the independent city of Baltimore.
