Westminster, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baltimore–Washington Metropolitan Area and is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of downtown Baltimore. Westminster has been home to the United States Congress since 1789 and was one of the original towns in Carroll County. The first settler in what would become Westminster was James Fenton on April 24, 1787. He built a log cabin on land he had purchased from Nicholas Weems two years earlier for £4 per acre. A year later, on October 10th, Fenton married Anne Sutherland and they moved into their cabin with six other families who had also come to live in what would become Westminster. The town was named after Brigadier General Edward Braddock's brigade that fought at Monmouth County as part of Jacob Ross' Third Corps during the American Revolution. In 1824, John Dickinson donated land to form the nucleus of what would become North Bethesda Township which became known as Glen Burnie Township when it was organized by Act No., 3rd June 1827; and then finally Westminster when it became a separate township by Act No., 7th July 1834 following purchases from five other townships within Prince George's County: Addison Heights (now Bowie), Arlington Heights (now Silver Spring), Druid Hills (now Takoma Park), Hampden Village (now Hyattsville) and Mount Vernon Highlands (nowMount Vernon). In 1870, Washington Gaslight Company built its first plant in Westminster – now glasshouse #1 – which made artificial light for homes and businesses across Prince George's County until 1978 when that company merged with Con Edison to form PG&E Corporation. In 1916-1917 Germans living near Fort McHenry were ordered to leave their homes because of US military buildup near Baltimore City limits; but no forcible eviction occurred since most left voluntarily before any real action could take place against them due to fear of retribution or violence from native Americans living nearby. During World War II many people who lived near Fort Meade came out to work at Point State Army Ammunition Plant where they produced munitions such as TNT and cordite used by Germany during World War II; but fortifications around Point State Army Ammunition Plant stopped German forces from entering or damaging facilities inside the complex after hostilities ended in 1945 primarily because it lacked an armored vehicle allowing troops entrance/exit without being fired upon

Today, Westminster is governed by a single mayor--John Meeks--who has been in office since January 1, 2011. The history of Westminster goes back over 350 years and began with settlers from Hanoveria who migrated to what is now Prince George's County in 1785 during the time period that Baltimore was being developed as an early nineteenth century market town on the eastern seaboard. unlike other colonial settlements which were centered around religious institutions such as churches or military barracks (such as Annapolis), Hanoveria grew slowly due to competition from earlier European settlements including Fredericktown and Stonington on the Susquehanna River opposite modern-day Bowie Township west of downtown Baltimore This struggle for supremacy between Fredericktown and Stonington would continue until 1795 when King George II issued his Royal Proclamation recognizing Hanoverian claims to all lands eastward along both streams proposed for sale under General Order No., XII (dated October 5th). At this time there were about 40 white inhabitants living within sight of Mount Vernon where Governor Dinwiddie had constructed his summer home near present day Mount Vernon Square The first settlers arrived relatively quickly due to good soil conditions available near Interlocken Creek where they built their log homes using tree limbs stripped from trees standing near their water supply By 1800 some 10 families lived in present day Westminster while others moved into adjacent towns such as Fredericktown and Sykesville In 1818 Windsor Sock construction began on what would become known as "Queen Anne" Street northwest of today’s Cathedral Square while development proceeded along smaller streets such as High Street just eastofpresentdayMountVernon square The following year saw another major milestone when Queen Anne Street received its first paving stones after weeks long construction work which included removing large boulders weighing many tons from behind King’s Chapel located at today’s intersection of Queen Anne Avenue North and Monument Street Northwest Although much progress had been made during these years some problems remained largely unresolved including disagreements about boundaries which would come up again during negotiations leading up to Confederation in 1781 . Eventually three commissioners were selected from each colony/territory pursuant to Order XI – James Knoppers appointed Commissioner for Maryland Territory; David Roberts appointed Commissioner for Northern Virginia; Francis NicholsonappointedCommissionerfor central Maryland These officers functioned independently but shared jurisdiction over certain cases arising within their respective areas mainly regarding sales taxes etc but also concerning defense matters resulting from tensions erupting among the colonies soon after Confederation Ultimately these conflicts would lead ultimately to separation within each Colony/Territory leading eventuallyto FormationofMarylandIn1787
