In the early 1800s, Westminster was a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland. It was known for its Glock pistols and shotguns, and its farmers made their living growing crops and raising livestock. One of the most important aspects of life for many people in this small town was their firearms. In 1827, the first gun-smith shop in Westminster opened its doors. This shop was run by John Farnsworth and his son Amos Farnsworth. The Farnsworths were some of the first to mass produce arms in America. They started making pistols and shotguns from local wood that they chopped down from the trees on their farm. These guns were very successful, and helped make Westminster one of the most rifle-happy towns in Maryland. The Gun Show at Independence Hall wasn't just about selling weapons; it also served as a meeting place for officials from all over Maryland to discuss firearm issues. Many famous Americans participated in these meetings, such as General Washington, John Adams, Thomas Paine, Founding Father Benjamin Franklin, and James Kenedy (the brother of President James Kenedy). In 1839, at the age of eighty-one years old, Amos Farnsworth passed away after serving his community faithfully for over fifty years. His son John took over running the business while JOHN FARNSWORTHY continued to create innovative firearms products that continue to be popular today!

Westminster is located on the Patuxent River and just north of downtown Frederick. The first settler in what would become Westminster was Nicholas Dorsey who arrived in 1781. He built a cabin on the banks of the river and named his settlement after London's Palace of Westminster which he had seen in a tourneyride with his brother John. In 1802, Nicholas' son-in-law, George Brown moved from Pennsylvania to start a mill on the river near where Westminster now stands. English cotton farmers began arriving in numbers along with enslaved Africans beginning around 1810 and by 1830 there were over 50 white families living in Westminster and millshtml!

While Downing Street is no longer used as a residence, it remains a popular tourist attraction because of its historic architecture and imperial flavor. Westminster has also been home to some of Maryland's most notable politicians including Governor James Ketchum (1957-1965), Congressman William Donaldson (1976-1981), Mayor Sheila Dixon (2002-2005), Judge Roy Moore (Ala.), Judge Roy Moore Jr.(Ala.), Senator Luther Strange (2012-2017) and Ulysses S. Grant Wood Jr., who served as mayor from 1922 to 1924
