The first settler in Westminster was Nicholas De Tonnelle, who arrived in 1727 and built a log cabin on the east side of present day State Road 7. In 1758, John Bowie moved from Salisbury to take up a farm on what is now Bowie Road. He married Susannah Sprague and together they founded a family that farmed for many years. In 1818, they donated land to the government for building barracks for soldiers during the Mexican–American War. They also donated land to build Stonington Hall which became home to West Point Military Academy (later West Point University) in 1872. In 1876, James Loyd bought some of Bowie Road from Sprague and began farming there until his death in 1893. His son James Fenton Loyd continued farming until his death in 1949; his widow then sold most of their land to Harry Washington Dillard Jr., who developed it into one of Maryland’s largest commercial areas with stores and services such as Edmonds Mills & Electric Light Company (now known as National Grid). When he died 31 years later, his widow again sold most of her holdings to Dillard’s heirs but kept enough land so that she could continue living there until her death in 1984. Westminster was first settled in 1781 by a group of British soldiers who were stationed at the nearby Fort Frederick. The town was named for Prince George, Duke of Cumberland, who had died in 1776. In 1812, Westminster became the capital of Maryland when Fredericktown was renamed to that purpose. It continued to be the capital until 1868 when Baltimore became the new capital of Maryland.
