Westminster is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It is the county seat of Prince George's County and has a population of 49,811 as of 2010. The name "Westminster" was derived from the English words "westminster Abbey," which means "house of God." The current courthouse was built in 1866 and replaced an earlier structure that had been burned down in 1814. However, because Congress had granted towns status in 1871 through an act known as the General Land Act, Westminster's citizens voted unanimously in favor of creating a town government under the leadership of Mayor Davenport. In 1898, following World War I and America's entry into World War II, Westminster became one of six U.S. cities (along with Providence RI; New York City; San Francisco CA; Baltimore MD; and Detroit MI) that agreed to become military targets during wartime bombings raids known as " daylight drops." As part of this agreement, all city services such as water supplies and streetlights were turned off at night for three weeks while bombers dropped live munitions near downtown areas
