Westminster is one of the oldest towns in America and was founded on May 12, 1774 by Edward Brooke as part of the original Western Shore Colony. It became a separate incorporated town on February 14, 1884. In 1976, it merged with neighboring Takoma Park to form one municipality. The first settlers arrived in what is now Westminster in 1774 when Edward Brooke sailed from England with 350 colonists including his brother-in-law Samuel Ogden and their families. After walking for days along the Eastern Shore of Maryland they reached a crossing over the Patapsco River into present-day Prince George's County on May 12th. They named their settlement "Westminster" after King George III’s Palace at Hampton Court which they had seen while staying there during his stay in England before departing for America. The first courthouse was built on Main Street in 1775 and served until 1802 when it moved to what is now government House (now the Queen's Chapel). The town prospered due to its location near rivers and water supplies as well as its strategic location between two major routes linkingWashington D C and Baltimore/Annapolis WMD making it an important center for trade and transportation throughout much of Maryland during the Revolutionary War period. In 1884, when Takoma Park was annexed by Westminster, both towns made common cause against proposed annexation by Frederick Douglass who felt that Takoma Park would have been watered down by incorporation into Westminster instead of being an independent municipality with its own police force and fire department etcetera

The town was renamed Westminster in 1855 after King George III of the United Kingdom, who gave it its present name. In 1907, Westminster became one of the original thirteen states in the Union.
