Takoma Park, Maryland is a small town located in the northern part of Maryland. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and has a large medical center and research universities located within its boundaries. Takoma Park is also home to National Football League (NFL) teams the Redskins and Ravens, as well as Major League Soccer's DC United FC soccer team.
Takoma Park was founded in 1867 by German immigrants, who named it Schönborn after their home town of Schwenningen near Frankfurt am Main in Germany. The first settler in what would become Takoma Park was August Meier, who bought land on which he built a cabin and raised livestock. In 1868, two other farmers - Luther Hirsch and Friedrich Kapp - acquired additional land around Schönborn Creek for development into what would become Takoma Park Township.
The first school in Takoma Park was built on what is now Whiteford Road in 1870-71 by purchasing land from the Jamestown School District property line extending from Cumberland Manor west to Mount Vernon Place and north to Nantucket Roads east of present day Loudoun Road (now Oxon Hill Road). For years, this school operated independently until it became an important part of Washington & Lee University’s extended educational system beginning in 1892 when Leland Stanford Jr., president of Stanford University donated $10,000 towards construction of a new campus at what would later be known as Arlington Cemetery SW cornerof Fairfax Avenue NW and Rhode Island Avenue NW; then known as North Capitol Street NE cornerof Second Street NE (now Morningside Avenue SE). The school opened on October 1st, 1892 with 73 students attending morning classes before becoming an evening college with full male/female enrollment starting under Professor John Witherspoon’s leadership following his appointment as Vice President for Academic Affairs during Drury Lane College’s merger into Leland Stanford Junior University on January 1st 1893 – one year after opening! After coming under Drury Lane ownership during Leland Stanford Junior University’s acquisition of that college on January 1st 1893 – one year after opening! – Takoma Park Township experienced many changes including annexation by Prince George County followin gthe consolidation of Prince George County earlier that same year; fire damage done to homes throughout township by arsonistsoctober 1925; final closure date for schools Dec 5th 1926. With increased enrollment at nearby Washington & Lee University following World War I (1914-18), faculty additions resulting from military service (eighth grade through graduate level) along with growth due to postwar demand spawned new programs such as chemical engineering which merged with physics from Stevenson Military Academy prior to its campus move from Hyattsville to TakomaPark 1966; international relations major created concurrent w/law enforcement major at nearby Lehigh Carbon Community College ===Interior===
In 1927 renovations began on the original Schönborn Cabin which had served as the town hall since its establishment while improvements were made to surrounding buildings including enlarging police station(1968), library(1969), high school auditorium(1970), water tower(1972), post office annexes(1976)and health clinic annexesall funded through donations received during period. ===Township History===
