Takoma Park is a census-designated place in Maryland, United States. The population was 7,826 as of the 2010 census. In 1834, John Marshall opened his dispensary in what is now known as Marshall’s Drugstore on Mount Pleasant Avenue. In 1838, Frederick Douglass moved to Takoma Park from where he had been living for years in Silver Spring. He set up shop at 6th and M Streets NW and began publishing his “ Narrative of an American Slave” here. In 1861, when America went into World War I, many businesses throughout Baltimore closed their doors because of the war effort; however, Takoma Park remained open with Main Street running parallel with Constitution Highway until after hostilities ended in 1918. In 1924, when Congress transferred oversight of public schools from Baltimore City Schools to District 1 of Montgomery County (now Prince George's), Takoma Park reverted back to its former status as an unincorporated community within Montgomery County.. Today’s shopping area around 16th Street NW includes several stores owned by JCPenney Corporation – including Sears Holdings Inc., Kmart Corporation (), Macy’s Inc., Lord & Taylor department store chain () – as well as Wegmans Super Markets (). Many residents also work at Johns Hopkins University Hospital or other local businesses located near 16th Street Northwest.. According to the 2000 Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library study "Patriots: American Men and Women Who Made a Difference", "the percentage of African Americans living in poverty increased significantly from 3 percent in 1970 to 20 percent by 1990". According to this study: "takomas park [was] one stop for job seekers before they were sent out into rural areas". This increase can be accredited partially due to high demand for housing during the late 1970s through early 1980s following Watergate which led economically distressed black families head towards suburban areas such as Takoma Park seeking some respite from racism

Takoma Park was first settled in 1776 by German immigrants. The area was first known as "Maskinonger's Heights" because of the high concentrations of Maskinongers, a Native American tribe. The name Takoma Park was derived from the word "tack-a-ma" which means "place where a bull is tethered." In 1857, the town of Takoma was organized and named after Judge James Fenton who had ruled in an arbitration case that brought about the incorporation of Takoma into Baltimore.
