The town was founded on July 4, 1870, when soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Regiment who had been stationed at Fort McHenry moved into what is now Takoma Park and began construction of their barracks there. The first store opened in Takoma Park on December 12, 1870. By 1872, a post office had been established and flour mills were being constructed. In 1875, the Tappan Zee Bridge was built over the Potomac River and Takoma Park became an incorporated town with its own government. In 1915, Major General John J Pershing ordered all U.S troops out of World War I and their equipment sent home for repair or storage; this left Takoma Park without military personnel for about two years. During that time, many businesses closed because no one could afford to buy replacement equipment or pay for shipping back home. On January 1st 1920, Congress passed legislation annexing Prince George's County to Washington County effectiveJanuary 1st 1921; as a result of this change in county boundaries, most of Takoma Park fell within Prince George's County while some areas located north of Interstate 695 (including much of today's Takoma Park) continued to be within Washington County until 1971 when they were annexed into Prince George's County too..
