The history of target holders in Takoma Park, Maryland goes back to at least 1868. That year, the first permanent target houses were erected on a parcel of land east of the Takoma Park Arsenal. The site was bought by Major James Hickey and his wife, Mrs. John Paine, and they laid out a shooting range there. In 1871, the Hickey’s young son John took over management of the range from their father; he continued to operate it until his death in 1923. When Major Hickey died, his widow donated the land for use as a shooting range and park. She also left money behind for charitable purposes. Today, the park is open to the public weekdays from 9am to 4pm during summer months and 10am to 3pm on other days; it also offers lessons in marksmanship for children aged 8 through 12 years old. The first permanent target houses were made from hardwood logs that had been cut down near where they are now located on Route 1 south of Takoma Park Boulevard. The targets were made using an old fashioned method called “bagging” which involved stretching a piece of cloth over each hole in the log and then putting paint or lead tags around it so that people could hit them with arrows or firearms while playing outdoors. After many successful years at this location,Major James Hickey decided to move his targets closer to town so that more people could experience what he had created without having to go out into rural areas all day long! He built two new permanent target houses on lot number 2 (now part of South Potomac Middle School) in 1875-76; these houses still stand today and can be seen from both sides of Route 1 between Takoma Park Boulevard and Falls Road . In addition, Hickey built a small private field adjacent to lot number 2 where people could shoot their targets during off-peak hours (9am-4pm). This area is now known as “Hickey Field” . In 1896, Captain Samuel Eliot Morison organized an event called “The Perfect Game” which was billed as being the world’s first competition for rifle shooters only! More than 200 participants came from throughout America including many notableomen such as General George Washington Carver and Adolphus Czaplicka! Morison hosted this event at Army headquarters in Washington D.C., but due to bad weather conditions almost all participants went home before dusk! The results show that even though rifle shooting wasn’t considered very important at that time just about everyone who participated shot some kind of weapon! Some pretty good shooters got some really good prizes though 🙂 Morison wanted future competitions held outside Washington D.C., so he started planning another event which would take place somewhere warm – like Miami Beach ! Unfortunately something happened which caused Morison second thoughts about hosting another outdoor competition within three years… World War I began!!!!!!!!! In 2013 Takoma Park adopted an LGBT pride parade policy that forbids organisers from using city streets for this event if it conflicts with local laws or street signs prohibiting such displays

Takoma Park was founded in 1781 by George Washington as the site of a seat for the town of Alexandria. The town was moved to Takoma in 1868 and then to Bethesda in 1936. Takoma Park is now a census-designated place (CDP) and part of the Montgomery County, Maryland metropolitan area.
