In 1836, Congress created Prince George's County as a result of the Second Organic Act of Maryland which abolished Baltimore County and merged its entirety into Prince George's County. The town of Takoma was founded on October 15, 1887 by New Englanders John Wakefield and his wife Ann Stonebridge after they discovered a rich coal deposit near present-day Silver Spring during their travels through southern Montgomery County looking for land for themselves and their families. As miners began arriving in large numbers to find new veins of coal, local businesses sprang up to support them: banks, stores, hotels/motels – all essential services for miners traveling long distances on horse or wagon trains carrying supplies back home while working underground. The town soon became an important transportation center with its own railroad station as well as two newspapers: The Daily Mirror and The Weekly Mirror (later known asThe Gazette). During World War II Takoma Park played host to various military installations including Camp David where General Dwight D Eisenhower held talks with president Franklin D Roosevelt about ending World War II; Fort Meade where American scientists developed Project Paperclip; Naval Air Station(now Naval Air Warfare Center) Patuxent River where Japanese planes were tested during World War II; Loudoun State University which opened its doors in 1951 as one of only three state universities within Maryland’s newly formed college system; Takoma Park High School which was established in 1911 as Washington & Northern’s Agricultural High School before becoming Marshall Field High School; North Bethesda Elementary School whichopened its doors in 1921; Glen Burnie Elementary School whichopened its doors in 1923; Bowie senior high school located on Calvert Street between California Avenue NW and National Road NW closed in 2003 but reopened under new management later that year.; Great Falls elementary school located just outside of town limits opened its doors on November 1st 1922 after being closed for over 20 years All these schools still remain open today although most have undergone various changes throughout their histories including name change exercises etc.. In 1984 Takoma Parks public library completed construction on a five-story building at 5500 Columbia Pike NE across from I-95 providing much needed sorely needed space for residents seeking booksand borrowing privileges had been given out prior to that date .The building has been used both for library programming such as art shows/ exhibitions events etc., often hosting film festivals utilizing donated equipment from nearby theaters whenever possible ;as well as storage since it offers almost unlimited floor space !
The Takoma Park neighborhood in Maryland was founded in 1814 by Captain John Smith and his wife, Pocahontas. The area was named for the takoma, or a type of oak tree. The first settler in the area was Nicholas Putnam, who arrived in 1792. In 1830, Captain George Washington and his family moved to Takoma Park from Mount Vernon. They were the first white people to live there. In 1835, Alexander Hamilton's family moved into the home that is now called Greenbrier House. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Takoma Park became part of Frederick County and was renamed Prince George's County after Prince George of Denmark. In 1904, it became an independent city once again.
