Takoma Park is a town located in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 27,627 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area and borders Prince George's County to the east and Frederick County to the west. Takoma Park was created from a merger of two smaller towns on April 14, 1892. It previously consisted of four villages: Takoma Park Heights, Takoma Park North, Takoma Park South and Rockville Centre. The first settler in what would become Takoma Park was Samuel Gregg who arrived in 1784 with his family from Pennsylvania. He built a farm near today's intersection of Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard and East Falls Road. In 1802, Captain John Smith discovered land around what is now Takoma Park when he explored the Potomac River for the Virginia Company during its Transatlantic expedition looking for new lands to sell to Americans. At that time there were only about 20 people living in what would become Montgomery County including present-day Takoma Park and it was named after Captain Smith’s home county of Hampshire (now Westmoreland). On April 14th, 1892 – just three years afterCaptain Smith discovered America’s newest country – four small villages merged into one larger community - all named after British Columbia towns which had been amalgamated into Canada - as part of an effort by Canadian officials to create more suburban communities within their jurisdiction (see also amalgamation process). The original village namesakes are still honored today with music festivals being held each year at various locations throughout Takomas Parks Village District - most recently at Fairmount Gardens on November 5th & 6th each year! These events are often billed as "a taste of British Columbia" with local food demonstrations/tours being given throughout the day while concerts featuring popular Canadian artists take place later in the evening or overnight! In 1907 Captain John Smith's son James Akeley founded Anacostia Airways which became an international carrier transporting passengers and cargo over water using powerboats until it ceased operations in 1971 when Lake Ontario flooded!!! Today Anacostia Airlines remains a legacy company active primarily providing transportation within Montgomery County !! In 1938 Driscoll Construction Company started construction on what would become known as “the greatest shopping center on Earth” - later renamed “Target”! The development ultimately failed but left behind an iconic building that can be found across much of downtown Bethesda along Connecticut Avenue NW! In 1967 M&M's Candy stores opened up shop within walking distance of several homes forming one giant candy store complex known locally as "Mallory Square". This mall closed down in 1992 but portions remain extant as shops such as JCPenney have reopened inside since then!!
