Although not directly affected by war production, many residents were displaced by munitions production or other military activity in what is now Takoma Park. After the war ended, most industry shifted away from Takoma Park; however, some businesses have held onto their positions through various transformations over time such as becoming small farmers or retailers before closing down for good or moving into new businesses elsewhere in Maryland or Virginia. In 1824, Captain John Smith's son-in-law, David Forbes, purchased the home site from McKay and began developing it into a village. In 1830, Forbes organized the first school in Takoma Park and in 1831 he erected the first courthouse in Takoma Park. In 1836, President Andrew Johnson named Takoma Park after him and it became an incorporated town with a government of its own. On May 12, 1870, General Hugh Wilson took command of Union Army troops stationed at Fort Mcdonough outside of Takoma Park and ordered them to march through the town to storm Confederate lines near Harpers Ferryroad. When they neared Harperstown they were met by 600 residents who had gathered to greet them. The soldiers stopped their march and formed line of battle around the small town while civilians streamed out to give them food and water. A skirmish ensued which ended when Wilson's men withdrew without taking any prisoners or damage to property
