The town was named for General James Hagerstown (1767-1848), one of the main proponents of westward expansion during the American Revolution and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The Takoma Park neighborhood of Washington, D.C., was first settled in 1783 by British colonists and their families who named it after the then-undeveloped area of present-day Takoma, Maryland. The community grew rapidly because of its location at the crossroads between two major rail lines and its proximity to government buildings and other lucrative businesses. By 1871, the population had grown to over 100 people and the name Takoma Park was applied to a wider area north of Dupont Circle. Takoma Park experienced some significant growth during World War II. Many key military sites were located here – including Fort Myer (now Arlington National Cemetery) and Camp Blanding (later Camp Lejeune). In 1954, Takoma Park became one of six neighborhoods in Washington, D.C., that were consolidated into one municipality under the name “Washington Heights”. This arrangement allowed for more centralized planning and better infrastructure development in what had been an extremely diverse region. Today, Takoma Park is a vibrant community with many interesting historical landmarks dating back to its colonial days. It is home to several cultural organizations as well as a number of parks that provide plenty of opportunities for activities such as hiking, biking, playing tennis or football, etc.

Takoma Park was originally a small, rural community located in the southern reaches of Maryland. It began as a cotton plantation and grew rapidly during the slave trade era.
