Takoma Park is a small town in the heart of Washington, D.C., and it has a long history dating back to when the area was part of Prince George's County. The name Takoma Park comes from two words, "tak" meaning "a place where people gather" and "ma" meaning "patch." In 1827, the first Europeans to visit what is now Takoma Park were Captain John Smith and his crew on their journey from Jamestown to Mount Vernon. They came ashore at present-day Takoma Park and built some homes before continuing their travels. In 1792, the United States Congress passed an act creating Prince George's County. It was named for King George II of Great Britain because he had given approval for its creation. The original county seat was located in Upper Marlboro, but by 1836 it had been moved to Takoma Park because of its location near national highways (the National Road) and its close proximity to both Georgetown and Washington D.C.. The town continued to grow over time as more people moved into the area and businesses started up. The popularity of cricket in early 19th century America led to the formation of the Takoma Cricket Association in 1798 which played matches between clubs from different towns throughout Maryland. In 1824, a group of businessmen formed a company that became known as Montgomery & Company which developed land south of Takoma Park along with other businesses such as flour mills, breweries, livery stable companies, meatpacking plants and theaters). The turnpike connecting Baltimore through Loudoun County was completed in 1830 making it easier for citizens living near Washington D.C./Baltimore to get there without having to go downriver or take multiple trips acrossstate lines. This also helped increase traffic on local roads which contributed significantly to growth in the town over time including new housing developments such as Germantown Heights/Germantown Manor followed by Parade Oaks/Petworth Commons eventually culminating with Northgate/Lawnside Plaza which replaced older buildings around 2005. This large-scale development not only increased population but also created significant infrastructure needs such as new schools (Washington Elementary School opened in 1907), fire halls (1896), water systems (1901) and expressways (I-495) that continue today form one major reason why TakomaPark remains one of DC's most populous communities even after many years since its peak during World War II when it reached nearly 100,000 residents
Takoma Park was first settled in 1798 when Captain John Smith and his crew of the USS Discovery charted a course for what they thought would be a new land. They were mistaken and landed on Takoma Inlet, which is now part of Prince George's County. The first house in the area was built by Capt. Robert Haddock on the present day corner of Montgomery Street and Barton Avenue in 1802. The town of Takoma Park was incorporated as a town in 1883, but it only lasted until 1920 when it merged with neighboring Rockville to form Takoma Park-Rockville Township. The original name for the township was "Montgomery" because its original residents were from Montgomery County, Maryland. In 1922, Takoma Park-Rockville Township changed their name to "Takoma Park" after buying out Montgomery's share of the name. In 1966, Takoma Park became an independent city and remains so today
