In the town of Takoma Park, MD, colonists from Jamestown arrived in 1607. The first gun target in Takoma Park was a blacksmith’s shop on the corner of White Street and Washington Avenue. The Target had been placed there by Captain John Smith to commemorate his landing at Jamestown. The first rifle target in the area was a “picket fence” near Masonic Lodge No. 2 on Spring Garden Road. This target was shot at by Major John Potts during the siege of Yorktown in 1781. After independence, Takoma Park became part of Prince George’s County, MD and gradually lost its importance as a center for shooting sports due to changes in population patterns and development around it. The Takoma Park gun target range was established in 1922. It was located on Ritchie Road, just south of the Takoma Park Mall. The range served as a training ground for the military and law enforcement agencies in the area. The range closed in 1984, but it is still remembered today as one of the most populargun ranges in Maryland.
Takoma Park is a census-designated place in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 108 at the 2010 census. Takoma Park is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Montgomery County metropolitan area. The first settlements in what is now Takoma Park were made up of farmers and their families who lived on farms near present-day Bladensburg Road and White Marsh Road. In 1837, Major General John C. Frémont established his headquarters at Takoma Hillock, which became home to the officers and men of his army encampment during their campaign across Maryland against Native Americans. In 1851, the town was incorporated as a village under the name of Takoma Heights. A post office was established at Takoma Hills in 1865, but it closed due to lack of mail service. In 1896, a railroad line linking Baltimore with Washington was completed through Takoma Park and other villages along its route; this led to increased business and development within the community. By 1903, when Ives Golledge built his estate on land that he had bought from Nicholas Merrill for $2 million (equivalent to $ in ), Takoma Park had become one of America's most expensive neighborhoods for elites living outside urban centers. However, fewer people moved into the neighborhood during World War II because many young military men were drafted into battle instead; however, many homes were leveled by firebombing during that war as part of Nazi plans to destroy American cities.[1] Afterward there was an increase in housing developments throughout Montgomery County;[2][3] however much progress has been made since then towards revitalization efforts such as bringing back shopping malls and parks to the streetscape of Takoma park proper,[4][5] while also preserving old buildings within walking distance for residential purposes only (a trend continuing today). Takoma Park is a congressional seat in the District of Columbia. It has been held by six different people and it is currently held by Rep. John Sarbanes. The Takoma Park community was established in 1865, when a group of farmers named themselves the "Takoma Park Farmers' Association." In 1871, the name was changed to Takoma Park Township and in 1903, it was renamed to Takoma Park, Maryland. The population of Takoma Park peaked at over 100,000 in 1933 and dropped to about 60,000 by 1950. However, since then there has been an increase in the population with more people moving into the area from other parts of D.C.. Today, the population of Takoma Park is about 30,000 residents and it is one of the most diverse communities in D.C.. The history of Takoma Park begins with early settlers who arrived here around 1865. These men were farmers who wanted to be close to their families back home but also wanted to find a place where they could make their own rules and live within hispanic/a latino culture as well as English culture while still living within hispanic/a latino tradition. They started a small community called "El Rancho" which sat on land that today forms part of Shady Grove Cemetery located just east of I-495 between U Street and Constitution Avenue NW.). El Rancho consisted mainly of farmhands who would take care of crops and animals while their owner stayed behind to provide goods such as clothing or shelter for their family members. In 1871, when Shady Grove Cemetery was founded (it had already been mentioned earlier that year), only white people were allowed to burial services there so African American citizens were not able to participate until after World War II when regulations changed again! In 1875-1876 (the same year that Stonington Mines opened up), many miners came through town looking for work but due to high costs associated with traveling out all season long just for coal mining instead of staying at home like previous generations they decided against it and return home before too long! This led directly into what would become known as "The Great Migration". By 1880 almost all black citizens living within two miles radius had left for better opportunities elsewhere because jobs available outside D.C.(outside those areas controlled by white supremacists) were much better paying than Coal Mining jobs! After The Great Migration many new immigrants started arriving here from Hungary (then Transylvania) during this time period as well which led eventually into what became known as "The Japanese Generation." Many Japanese Americans worked on farms during this time period doing everything from picking potatoes until setting gardens; however some managed businesses such as sushi restaurants or convenience stores etcetera! However even though these businesses did well initially there was always tension between these groups because some felt like they didn't get treated fairly whereas others thought that these businesses helped contribute greatly towards social progressivism etcetera!!! This tension eventually boiled over during World War II when many Japanese Americans working inside military industries got caught up in quotas set upon America's allies( Britain especially) relativeTo America's allies( Russia etc.)!! After years Of Protest & Hardship they finally received equal treatment under wartime regulation aka The Fair Labor Standards Act!!! Although not perfect this law did help define how workers rights should be considered throughout America thereafter!!
The Takoma Park neighborhood in Prince George's County, Maryland was originally part of the town of Takoma. The area was first settled by German immigrants in the early 1800s. In 1875, the town of Takoma merged with neighboring Alexandria to form a new municipality. The merger resulted in the addition of the neighborhoods of Takoma Park and Friendship Heights to Prince George's County. In 1898, when Prince George's County became an independent county, Takoma Park remained within its borders. However, in 1907 it amalgamated with Friendship Heights to form what is now known as Takoma Park. The name "Takoma" comes from two nearby hills which are collectively called "Takomas". One hill is located near Chevy Chase and another is located near Bethesda-Silver Spring. These hills were once used for hunting and gathering purposes. Today, both hills are home to a number of homes and businesses. The neighborhood has undergone many changes throughout its history; some have been more positive than others. For instance, while Friendship Heights has seen a significant influx of high-end development over the years, Takoma Park has seen some modest improvements over time including increased access to public transportation options and more affordable housing options.
