In 1876, Edward Everett Hale purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) east of present-day Takoma Park and renamed it Afternoon Valley after his late wife's birthplace on Long Island. In 1907, he donated the shade trees on his property to be used as part of the park which bears his name today. In 1912, Alfred Bogan founded a grocery store in Takoma Park which became one of the most successful stores in Montgomery County until its closure in 1976. The first high school built in Takomapark was Normal School District No. 5A's Normal School opened on October 15th 1915 under guidance of Superintendent Drury Hargrave with pupils from two rural villages who had gathered to protest against low tuition rates at nearby Howard University; Normal School closed October 1st 1918 due largely to World War I hostilities and lack of funding for new buildings despite taunts from then-President Woodrow Wilson! On January 2nd 1922 local resident Mrs. Alice Griffiths organized a bake sale at her home against rising taxes that year but when noone came she announced an open house inviting anyone who wanted to see how much baking could be done without using any ovens! Attendance reached 1500 people including Mayor James Kapp and 50 members of the Board Of Education! A plaque dedicated to Mrs. Griffiths reads: "Alice Griffiths - Pioneer Cookbook Committee Member 1923 - 1927" During this time normal schools were also established at Laurel Hill Elementary (later Easton Middle), Prince George's High (now Bowie High), Friendship Heights Elementary (later Friendship Heights Intermediate), Glenmont Intermediate/Senior High School (now Glenmont Senior/High School), Eastern Mennonite College (now Eastern Mennonite University) and Highland ParkElementarySchool(now Highland Park Middle). On July 6th 1924 school #5A merged intoNormal School District No1 which evolved into Montgomery County Public Schools starting September 3rd 1926! With modern facilities such as Forman Learning Center & Digital Library System available during this time there has never been a need for another high school!!! The current elementary schools are: Friendship Heights Elementary-(1974-2007), Glenmont Intermediate/Senior High School-(1979-present), Highland ParkMiddle-(2002-present) & Northern Virginia Regional Vocational Technical Institute-(2008-) . There are also many other private schools located within easy walking distance including Bethesda Catholic HS(2006-) & King'S Mount HS(2009-) . Unfortunately we have not been able to find any pictures or information about them so please let us know if you can find any!! With over 10 thousand residents living within ZIP Code 19027, there are plenty opportunities for interaction between residents and outsiders whether it be through clubs or organizations like debating societies or get out doors clubs like soccer or cricket teams etc., however few take advantage because activities offer limited financial return on investment outside events/meetups characterized by socializing+learning about new friends rather than earning money through services rendered

In 1814, James River Road (later MD Route 219) passed through what is now Takoma Park and it became a commercial center for goods brought up the Potomac River by boat or wagon from Alexandria, Virginia and points beyond. A post office was established at Takoma Park in 1827, but no mail ran there until 1832. In 1830, Frederick Douglass purchased some land south of today's intersection of MD 210 and Old US 301/MD 223 near Naylor House Pond for his slaves who would be worked there when he was free. He named his plantation "Douglas Island" after himself and built a white cottage on it as their home until his death in 1865. In 1870, Frederick Douglass School opened in honor of him there. In 1907 the Northern District Railway constructed a line from Bethesda to Takoma Park which connected with mainline railroads at White Flint Junction just outside present day Takomas park boundaries east of Interstate 95 north of Ballston Lake), setting off a period of growth for this rural community known as "The Railroad Age". This period saw significant investment in local roads, schools (including Douglass High School), businesses (including several grocery stores), churches (including one founded by Methodist minister John Wesley Hardeman), new homes built throughout the town limits – even into into Prince George’s County to take advantage of improved transportation infrastructure available then – all culminating with incorporation as a borough within Montgomery County on February 11th 1909 under Mayor Capps’ leadership following approval by referendum held December 3rd 1908 As suburban areas expanded rapidly across northern Montgomery County during this time period many residents followed suit seeking annexation into other municipalities such as Silver Spring or Hyattsville while still maintaining close ties to their ancestral hometowns whichcontinue to play an important role within their social lives today .
