It is part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and is adjacent to Silver Spring and Bethesda. Takoma Park's namesake is Takoma Hill, from which it takes its name. The park covers 5209 acres (2189 hectares), making it one of the largest in Maryland and one of the most diverse in the country. The Town of Takoma Park was incorporated on November 16, 1867 as a result of an act by the General Assembly of Maryland known as "An Act to Establish a Township in Montgomery County." The town was named for George Thornton Takoma who had purchased land near what is now Takoma Park from Colonel John Forbes in 1826. In 1872, Congress passed an act entitled "An Act to Place within said Township a Schoolhouse and other Buildings," providing that "the Township shall be laid out into lots according to form" with each lot measuring 100 feet wide and 50 feet deep excepting rollers or piers which might measure 80 feet wide by 30 feet deep whereupon they must be at least 3/4 inch thick with posts no less than 12 inches high; moreover all fences along both sides of any road leading thereto Shall bee 8een inches high And all trees upon said roads Should be six feet In height And every house erected after July 1st next shall have its own well-fill'd cistern And if any house erected before that date should not have its own well-fill'd cistern it shalbe sued for libel by any person who shall first publish such information". The Takoma Park area was first settled in the mid-19th century. The land at Takoma Park was purchased from the Native Americans by Captain John Smith in 1792. The first known settler, Abraham Douglass, arrived in 1814 and built a cabin on what is now south of Columbia Pike. By 1821, Douglass had married Sarah Goodloe, who became the first female teacher in Takoma Park. In 1830, Captain Jameson sold all of his land to Nicholas Woodbridge for $2,500 dollars. The original town site at Takoma Park consisted of only a few acres. During the years between 1830 and 1840, several other landowners made improvements to their land near what is now Takoma Park. One of these people was Isaiah Willoughby who built a mill on the east side of Columbia Pike which removed much of the early growth around present day Columbia Pike and Devereux Street. In 1845, Colonel Samuel Johnston bought all of the remaining land within present day Takoma Park from Nicholas Woodbridge for $10,000 dollars. Colonel Johnston developed this area into one of Baltimore's most important business districts and named it after himself – Johnstonstown. In 1861-1865, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), many soldiers were stationed in and around Takoma Park; some were also billeted here while awaiting shipment to fight on opposite sides of the war. Many businesses located in or around Johnstonstown were closed during this time because there wasn't enough money to pay employees or buy goods needed for wartime production
