The town was named for King George Washington and Queen Anne. The first settler in Takoma Park was Nicholas Forman. In 1827, the population of Takoma Park had grown to over 1,000 people and it became a borough within the new district. On December 15, 1867, Takoma Park annexed Prince George's County. On May 3, 1870, Takoma Park became an incorporated municipality with a population of over 10,000 people. On November 5th 1898, when Congress created the United States Postal Service in its first major piece of legislation since the post office was established*, Takoma Park became one of its first mail districts. The growth and development of the community has led to many unique aspects such as its now-famous street lights* which were installed in 1922 following an effort to improve lighting throughout the community during night times*. Additionally*, many famous landmarks have been erected or are known for their presence in Takoma Park including: Mount Vernon Place (now home to Verizon) *; National Civil War Museum *; and Takoma Place Shopping Center * which is also home to several high-end restaurants like Benares* and Benares Chinese Restaurant*. Today*, with so much history associated with it*, there is no doubt that TakomasPark has something truly special going for it!
The Takoma Park area was first settled by the Potomac River Indians in the 17th century. In 1814, the United States acquired it from Britain as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The town was named after General James K. Polk, a U.S. president who acquired territory in Mexico during the American Civil War. By 1870, Takoma Park had a population of about 1,500 people and was one of six towns in Maryland that were established as agricultural settlements on land that would become known as Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge.
