Takoma Park is a census-designated place in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 94 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Frederick, DC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Takoma Park was formed from the merger of two smaller communities: Takoma and Glenmont. The area now known as Takoma Park was first settled by English colonists in 1634. The name "Takoma" is derived from the Algonquian word "tanka." The original settler was John Smith, who purchased land in what is now Takoma Park from Chief Sekouwachew for £3 per acre (equivalent to $ today). In 1785, Captain Anthony Wayne founded Fort Frederick on the site of modern-day Takomah Patent No. 5 and named it after his friend and mentor General John Forbes, who had helped him gain military recognition during the French and Indian War.
