The history of firearms and light weapons in Salisbury, Maryland goes back to the earliest days of the town. In 1781, Steve Potts founded a small gunsmith shop on Main Street. The shop was located in what is now the Salisbury Civic Center. Potts developed a patent-pending design for a personal flamethrower that he named the "Light Brigade." The Light Brigade was used by British forces during the American Revolution as an effective means of illumination. In 1819, John Fenton opened his store on Market Street in Salisbury. He became known for his comprehensive range of firearms and light weapons including pistols, shotguns, rifles, shotguns and cannons. Fenton's store was destroyed by fire in 1869 but he rebuilt it at 301 West Main Street. His business thrived until 1875 when he passed away. "John Fenton's Store", 301 West Main Street (now called "The John Fenton Building"), is still standing and houses various businesses today including The Gables Restaurant & Tavern

Salisbury is located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and has a maritime history dating back to 1755 when the first ship called "Princess Anne" sailed from Portsmouth, England for MD/VA with cargo of saltpeter and other supplies destined for Roanoke Island. The community was founded in 1827 as a stop on the Harpers Ferry Road between Frederick and Annapolis. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its strategic location as one of several points along the Potomac River where goods could be transported by water from Washington D.C. and Baltimore. In 1878, Salisbury became an incorporated village under common law following an act by the General Assembly of Prince George's County which authorized incorporation pursuant to Chapter 479 ofthe Statutes of Maryland (1878). In 1922, it merged with neighboring Upper Marlboro to form what is now known as Salisbury Township (from then until 1889 it was just Upper Marlboro). In 1938, during World War II, Salisbury served as headquarters for Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force Station No. 3 in nearby Middleburg Heights; this station played an important role in fighter operations against Nazi Germany over Europe. After World War II ended, much ofactivation activity at Ninth AAF Station No."3" ceased and most personnel moved upriver to new facilities at Langley AFB near Hampton Roads prior to closure of that installation in 1945. Today much local economic activity takes place within Salisbury township itself through businesses such as those mentioned above or others specializing in agriculture; manufacturing; light industrial production; service sector jobs including restaurants etc.; farming activities providing milk products etc.; cottage industry such as handicrafts etc.; tourism; gift shops catering to tourists from all over America who visit Middleburg Heights or surrounding areas while also supplying local residents with items they may need such as clothing or groceries while traveling nearby
