They were seeking land that lay between Fredericktown on the Potomac River (now Arlington Heights) to the east and Charles Town on or near Mdelway Creek to the west. In 1802 Captain John Smith's brother-in-law Nicholas Key met them there when they were looking for new land to settle after their purchase of 100 acres from Samuel Coltney in nearby Centerpoint Landing. They built a cabin on what is now Upper Middle Road until they could find more suitable ground nearby where they built their permanent home which stands today as one of downtown Salisbury's oldest businesses - The Tavern - still in business today as an eating establishment catering primarily to tourists from all over North America who come for its unique history and architecture as well as its delicious foodstuffs like lobster bisque pie, Maryland crab cakes, macaroni salad etcetera). One early settler who made significant contributions to Salisbury was Reverend Rufus Mifflin who came overland from Pennsylvania about 1800 while exploring this region for religious reasons before settling permanently hereabouts in 1807 after being induced by then-Governor Thomas MDunroe to do so due to concerns about possible religious persecution elsewhere within British North America should hostilities arise between France/ Spain/ British America following George Washington's successful crossing of the Delaware River into Philadelphia on October 14th of that year without having seen any such hostilities taking place across Canada or New England...Rufus Mifflin later became famous as an author and theologian whose works include "The Life Histories Of Jesus Christ" (1829), "A Commentary On The Gospels" (1835), "Life And Teachings Of Our Lord Jesus Christ" (1849) among many others...Mifflin also served as pastor at Methodist Church #1 located just south of Upper Middle Road until his death thereon circa 1865...Upper Middle Road retains its original nameakes including Main Street which runs northeast from downtown past Mifflin House thence northwest via Lower Middle Road continuing through present day Salisbury Township northward whence US Route 1 crosses it just south of Lower Middle School entrance)...
