Salisbury is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,722 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is one of the oldest towns in Prince George's County and has been around for over 500 years. It was incorporated as a town on December 3, 1792. It became part of the new Baltimore City government on January 1, 1827. The first settlers to what is now Salisbury were five men from Cambridge, England who arrived in what is now Prince George's County on December 3, 1792 during the first year of George Washington's presidency. The men were: John Thornton (from London), Ebenezer Barnard (from Ipswich), William Potter (from Norwich), Moses Childs (of Walthamstow) and Nicholas Deane (of Chelmsford). They built a small cabin on a hill near present-day downtown Salisbury and named it "Hilton" after their home countrymen Sir James Hilton and his son Samuel Hilton. They started an agricultural community that soon developed into a town with its own school system and courthouse. In 1827, when Baltimore City was formed from parts of two previous cities – Staunton and Chesterfield – Salisbury became one of its dependencies within the new government. As part of Baltimore City proper it had jurisdiction over all but 2 percent of its territory; throughout most of Maryland it administered by lower court judges who acted as assessors or commissioners responsible only to their fellow city officials. In 1856–57 whenBaltimore City began annexing smaller towns eastward along I-70/I-81 there was some concern that much valuable real estate within rural areas would become annexed without consideration for village residents whose homes might be destroyed or reduced in value if they didn't exist withinBaltimoreCity limits anymore! However Mayor David Dixon convinced those annexation hearings that since many villagers had sided with Baltimore against incorporation efforts they should not be counted among "the displaced", nor should their properties be taken away without their consent! This gave rise to the term “Bengalsburg” which refers to today’s Downtown Salisbury while still including much rural land which has never been annexed northward since then! On July 12, 1861 General Edwin Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln outside Ford Theatre in Washington D C leading to tragic riots throughout America known as The Great American Civil War followed by Reconstruction period which finally ended after Confederate victory at Appomattox Court House in 1865
Salisbury was a town in and around Frederick, Maryland from 1785 to 1848. It was the seat of Frederick County from 1785 until it was moved to Salisbury in 1848. The first permanent settler in what is now Salisbury was Captain Samuel Mifflin, who arrived in 1784. The town's name is derived from Sir John Salisbury, 1st Baronet (1698-1756), an English nobleman who served as Governor of North America between 1734 and 1736. The first post office was established at present-day Salisbury on December 12, 1800. In 1814, the town received a gift of land from George Washington for the erection of a public square. In 1861, when Sligo Township formed part of Prince George’s County, most residents left their homes and businesses behind to join the new township. Most salutations given today to Captain Samuel Mifflin can be traced back to him – simply called "Mifflin" instead of "Sir John."
