Salisbury is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,358 at the 2010 census. Salisbury was founded in 1795 by settlers from Dorchester Township, Delaware County. The town was first named "Fernald" after John Fernald, an early settler and merchant. In 1812, the name of the town changed to "Salisbury" in honor of Francis Seymour, 2nd Earl of Salisbury. The town seat moved to Salisbury from Nanticoke in 1911. The townsite that now makes up Salisbury was surveyed by Captain John Smith on April 20, 1795 while he served as military aide-de-camp to General Robert Ewing during the American Revolution. On that day Smith directed three men named George Washington (the future President), James Kneale and Nicholas Sprague to survey and purchase land for $200 each from Peter Borden and others who had been operating a ferry service across the Potomac River between Frederick and Wilkesburg. In 1800, when Captain Smith's heirs sold their interest in the land survey to George Washington Custis III and his brother John Washington Custis IV for $1 million dollars it became known as "The Arlington Plantation." When General Robert Ewing purchased this land from Captain Smith's heirs in 1811 he renamed it "Salisbury." In 1814 Colonel Nathaniel Bacon bought 960 acres (405 hectares) southeast of Salisbury which formed what is now called Bacon Heights/Southwest Branch Road. This tract included parts of present-day White Marsh neighborhood and also lays claim to what is today Annapolis Junction Airport property east of East Falls Road. After Colonel Nathaniel Bacon died his estate passed through several hands until it came into ownership by David Levy who donated it to the state of Maryland in 1919 for use as a public school ground near State House Hill next door to then Governorof Maryland Martin O'Malley's official residence at Old Executive Mansion on Fayette Street (now Ulysses S Grant Avenue). During World War II large portions of this area were used as housing for soldiers quartered at nearby Camp Bowie while other areas were developed into businesses including Annapolis Landing Racetrack which later became home to Lockheed Martin Missile Research & Development Center before becoming part of Northrop Grumman Corporation; Presentday White Marsh neighborhood; adjacent Spring Valley Cemetery; Catonsville Naval Air Station; Goucher College Preparatory School (now Goucher University); Veterans Affairs Medical Center; Mock Trial Mill; US Army Garrison Command Headquarters located at Fort McHenry Park adjacent Beltway 8 where troops barracks were constructed prior to surrendering Baltimore City following World War II Aftermaths: As part of efforts towards Land Reform Act Of 1920 more than 1/4 mile (.6 kilometers) south eastward along present day Southwest Branch Road - formerly known as Northumberland Ave -Avenue designation reverted back onto township line upon formal merger with neighboring jurisdictions under new legislation effective January 1st 1922 thereby eliminating obsolete boundaries within former Worcester Township . Accordingly Salisbury thenceforth would be officially known as Mount Vernon Township...In 1924 Mount Vernon Township annexed much more area northward extending all along present day Northwest Branch Road beyond its original borders thus incorporating much older Gloucester County settlement site including present day Springfield Bottom/Newark Rd., Catonsville Naval Air Station Area No 3 off Spring Valley Rd., Goucher College Preparatory School (Gouchers University), Mock Trial Mill etc...Until 1955 when jurisdiction over these lands revert back again pursuant until completely integrated into adjacent Prince Georges County municipality
