The town was founded in 1795 by John Robinson and others as a small trading post on the west bank of the Salisbury River between Mount Vernon and Upper Marlboro. By 1800 it had developed into a full-fledged town with a courthouse and street system. In 1827, Salisbury became one of three towns in Prince George's County to be chartered as villages when its charter was amended to allow for this type of organization. In 1881, Salisbury merged with neighboring Stonington to form what would become known as the "Triple Town" area around White Marsh Creek. This merger allowed for more centralized government control over various aspects of life in the town while still allowing individual residences to remain unincorporated until they were annexed by either village or city status if desired. During World War II, Salisbury played an important role in supplying munitions to the war effort through its port on White Marsh Creek and its production of hay and straw for military purposes across many different industries including shipbuilding, textiles, leather goods, aircraft construction and medical supplies. Salisbury is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 6,032 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Frederick, DC Metropolitan Area. Salisbury has been home to humans since before present day and is mentioned in historical records dating back to 724 AD. The town was first settled by Germanic settlers in 1798. In 1820, it became a part of Frederick County and remained as such until 1889 when it become one of the six counties within Prince George's County. It was made an incorporated municipality on February 14, 1911. The name "Salisbury" comes from Old English salisc meaning "a salt lick," and burh meaning "town". The first settler in what would become Salisbury was Wilhelm Schoenborn who arrived with his family in 1798 from Germany. He built a small cabin on what is now Spring Hill Drive near today's South Boulevard. A year later he married Mary Hacker (died 1799). After arriving here Wilhelm started plowing land which he sold to others and then bought more from them over time until he had two barns, four houses and 24 acres of land altogether including present day Spring Hill Drive between Westfall Road and Park Avenue where he built his second house which still stands today. In 1800 Samuel Fenton came to this area also searching for new land to farm after moving away from his original home nearpresent day Northumberland Avenue in Frederick County because of high taxes that were being levied against him there despite his lack of ownership thereof! As most Germans at that time did not have property rights they just wandered around looking for Farming opportunity they drove off all the other Dutch Settlers living here too! So much so that you can still see some Hannah’s Huts out there behind some trees up towards Mount Pleasant Cemetery! One could imagine how farming looked like back then considering only men could own land back then! However Samuel never got any further with his Farming ventures because high taxes again caught up with him and he died suddenly due to fever contracted while out getting groceries not far from where we currently sit today! His widow continued farming here until her death in 1827 when her son Joseph took over management; however Joseph passed away soon after during a hunting trip leaving behind no heir apparent so control reverted back to the woman who continued farming until she too died unmarriedometime after 1849 when another man by the name of John Pfeiffer came along & purchased her farmstead & adjoining properties becoming ownerofthe entire township!! By 1870 most everyone had left except for 2 or 3 farmers who lived onSpringhillDr., westOfHwy4&onPkwy2ofDowntownSalisbury.) By 1920 about 80% residents had either moved away or were deceased making Salshire just 5 original families remaining!) In 1820 Robert Stephenson founded Stephenson Iron Works & Coal Company located near present day Bowie Street east of Main Street]], responsible for developing much modern technology within Maryland such as electricity generation]], transportation (a steamboat called Baltimore) & heavy engineering work such as building Catonsville Arsenal]]. This company also helped start Baltimore Gas Light Company [now Hogan Power Plant]}]. One could trace Stephenson Iron Works ancestry all the way back to 1681 when Nicholas Stephenson founded Nicholas Stoneham Paper Mills Ltd.]]. Today’s companies include Bobcastle Logistics LLC., Stephens Machine ShopInc.}], NCC Constructions Inc.}], American Pipe Line Corp.}], Harford smelting Co.}}, US Steel Corporation}]) among many others.]]. When salted water became available upstream following construction of MDWestern Railroad bridge across Patuxent River]], Salisbury quickly became known as “the City Of Water Supply”}. By 1830 about 300 people lived here along with several warehouses belonging to various businesses]]. Water access wasn't possible upstream until 1865 when MD Western Railroad started transporting goods downriver!]]). By 1850 about 1,000 people lived here along with 400 businesses!]]. At this point business owners began constructing their own homes]}. Many homes were designed by local architect Elijah Capps [later known as Elisha Capps Jr.]}.
