Salisbury is located on the eastern edge of Washington County and is bordered to the north by Frederick County and to the west by Anne Arundel County. It is portion of Salisbury Township. The first mention of what would become Salisbury was in 1689 when Captain John Smith visited the area and noted that "a small village called Scituate" lay across the Potomac River from present-day Salisbury. By 1860, there were twenty-eight businesses in town with a payroll of $5,000. In 1865, Samuel Fenton erected a schoolhouse and store near where he also ran a mercantile business until his death in 1868. The First Baptist Church was founded in 1870 and today remains one of America's oldest religious buildings still standing as well as one of its most popular tourist attractions; it has been featured on several television shows including "Cheers". In 1899, Congress passed an act giving all towns within Washington County (then part of Prince George's County) for election purposes two members per township who held office for four years renewable once only; this act also created Prince George's Co., MD as an independent county with its own government separate from that of Washington County . On March 1st 1909, when Prince George's Co., MD became fully organized as an independent county under President William Howard Taft with its own government separate from that of Washington County - it included parts now within both Montgomery and Harford Counties - Salisbury voted to become its own municipality! And so it has always been: a tiny community surrounded by large rural areas full of people who share similar interests but neverresident together! It wasn't until after World War II did things start to change significantly here: during that war many soldiers served here including General Patton who spent time at Sandhurst (just outside town) before returning home .. The post-war boom saw new construction begin right up untilabout 1970 when other interests took over such as diversified farmingsteads aroundtown becoming more prevalent due to better soil conditions resulting from changes in climate brought about by global warming etc.; however much later another big development began attracting people into town: salaried jobs doing everything from clerical work through to technical services soon replaced farmhands etc…. Today Salisbury continues to be known for its vibrant arts scene complete with several restaurants/bars/pumpkin markets/museums etc…..and some residents continue to run their businesses unchanged despite changing times
