Three days later, on October 10th, General Hays called for all men between the ages of 25 and 45 to appear at military posts with their shotguns in hand and stay until morning if they could not find work elsewhere. Many people chose to go into hiding or leave town altogether. On October 14th, when news arrived that General Stonewall Jackson had surrendered at Appomattox Court House, most residents decided it was best to return home as there was no way back now that the army had been defeated.
