Salisbury is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is located on the eastern edge of Fredericktown Township and the western edge of Salisbury Heights Township. It is bordered to the north by Mount Pleasant and to the east by Calvert Manor. The first settlers in what would become Salisbury arrived in 1785 from Caroline County, Virginia. They were led by Captain John Smith who landed at what is now Easton on March 10th that year with his family and sixteen other colonists including four women and six children. The original house where present-day Salisbury High School stands was built in 1792 by Major William Thornton for Colonel John Forbes, 3rd Baron Baltimore who had purchased land from Lord Fairfax near modern day Bowie Street and Northampton Road. In 1814, when Prince George's County was established, Salisbury became a part of it as well as Bowiestown which lay to the south and west of town. There were several mills run through town during this time such as one owned by Joseph Burgess named after him that ran until 1865; however all were taken down beginning around 1870 because of competition from larger mills further away in neighboring counties. In 1836 James Weldon developed a large farm southwest of town along Westcott Avenue which he called "The Weldon." He raised corn, soybeans, rice and other crops until his death in 1907 leaving behind an impressive estate including twenty-six buildings on over 7 acres including a three story brick mansion known as "The Park" which still stands today (although much reduced in size). Later industrialists such as Augustus Kelley started developing businesses within town limits such as lumberyards, breweries and garages. However most heavy industry left for nearby Laurel or Takoma late into the 20th century due to regulations brought about during World War II preventing companies from locating near military areas or using resources needed for war production domestically instead – limiting salaries for workers to just $2 per week versus $15+ per hour today when similar jobs can be found elsewhere without sacrificing quality or safety standards despite high costs associated with those same job functions these days). Today Salisbury retains its small community feel with many residents involved in local charities, committees/associations or politics within their respective communities while also enjoying easy access to shopping malls across Prince George's County or Washington D.C., both ways providing plenty of opportunities for social interaction outside of workdays etc.. The current mayor is Donny Kapp. The first settler in what would become Salisbury was Nicholas Crouch who arrived in 1695 with his family from England. He started a farm near present-day Salisbury Mills and named it after his home country of Somerset, England which he had seen on his travels. By 1720 the area that would become Salisbury had been developed as a small farming community with about 20 settlers living thereabouts. In 1768 John Armstrong founded Armstrong & Armstrong Steamboat Company wharf on the southern bank of the Patuxent River just south of present day Point Park Avenue and east ofpresent day Cemetery Road (now US 1).
