The town was named after the then-province of Salisbury, England and was established on April 17, 1749 by order of General Sir Frederick Macdonough. In 1814, the town passed into Confederate control during the American Civil War and soon afterward became an important industrial center with production of goods such as corduroys, shoes, saddles and other items for soldiers.
