Salisbury is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-National Capital Region. The town was first settled by Germans in 1785. In 1834, it was renamed for Sir Walter Salisbury, 1st Baronet (1736–1814), who had represented Salisbury in the House of Commons from 1790 to 1800 and again from 1807 to 1830. The village of Salisbury proper was established on February 12, 1835 by order of Lieutenant Governor John Mifflin as a way station on the road from Fredericktown to Annapolis Junction. The first store opened in 1839 and the post office operated until 1865. A sawmill started operations in 1840 and continued until 1951; a gristmill began operation in 1845 and continued until 1988; an oil well was drilled in 1902 and produced gas until 1974; a water tower dating back to 1907 was built; and a school building opened in 1909. In 1925, Salisbury became one of six towns within Prince George's County that were annexed into Howard County when that county was created from parts of Montgomery County. In 1955, the Town Council enacted an ordinance creating the current form of government with three members elected at large plus Mayor who directs all affairs except public works which are under direction of Township Councilors with apportionment based on population size rather than just land value). Salisbury is a town in western Maryland, United States. The population was 6,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Salisbury County. The community was founded by British colonists in 1755 as "Salisbury Court House". Salisbury's rich history can be traced back to its founding as a small town on the southern border of Cecil County by British colonists. In 1755, when the area now comprising Salisbury was part of Cecil County, it was named "Salisbury Court House." The first settler in what is now Salisbury Township was John Cowan from Scotland who arrived in December of that year. He and his family built a log cabin on what is now First Street just east ofpresent-day Main Avenue. The first school opened in 1814 in what is now First Street School District 196; it taught children between the ages of 3 and 12 years old. A new school building replaced the old one in 1854; it served grades 1-8th until 1953 when it was moved to present-day Second Street School District 186 which operated from then until 1991 when it merged with FirstDistrict 196 to form current district 186. In 1865, Colonel George Washington visited Salisbury while campaigning for president and he stayed at Cowan's cabin while touring Cecil County; this event marks one of only two occasions during George Washington's presidency where he toured America's southern border areas (the other being his visit to Charleston). This visit led to the establishment of a post office at Salisbury Court House on July 5, 1865 under postal administration by General Order No. 9; this office served as an annex to Cecil Post Office #2 located south of present-day Route 213 west of Centreville before that became operational on October 10th, 1865. In 1876, salinity problems caused more than $1 million worth (at today's prices) damage to Fishing Pier No 4 located near present day High Bridge Road and Park Drive; repairs were finally completed in 1984 after over 50 years! In 1916 Elisha Gray developed land contiguous with present day Salisbury Township for housing purposes adjacent east side lot#4 within limits set out for him by Commissioners John Herndon & Ebenezer Goodloe upon their recommendation following their tourof inspection made during November 15th 1915 following public outcry over conditions existing on Gray’s lots adjoining Highlandtown Cemetery!
