Salisbury is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Frederick, MD–VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Salisbury was founded in 1784 by British settlers as "Newington". It became a town on December 12, 1846 when it merged with neighboring Newington Township to form Prince George's County. The name "Salisbury" comes from the old English word "salvin", meaning 'salt water'. The first settler in what would become Salisbury was James Alleyne who arrived in 1784 and purchased land near what is now Main Street. He named his new settlement after his son-in-law John Salvin who had settled in the area about two years earlier. In 1800 John Denton arrived and built a log cabin on what is now High Street. Denton became one of the early entrepreneurs of Salisbury and helped to make it one of the leading towns in Prince George's County. In 1805 he also built a large frame house on present day Northgate Road which served as the county courthouse until 1889 when it was replaced by its current structure on York Road. In 1846 three brothers - Samuel (John), Peter (George) and Isaac Morse - decided to move from Baltimore to establish themselves as farmers west of Fredericktown Creek where they founded Salisbury Township on December 12th,1846 according to their willows tree planting legend The Morse brothers were notable for their philanthropy which included helping build Carney Institute College near Fredericktown Creek and later established First Baptist Church of America south of town which still stands today serving as an excellent museum providing insight into early American Christianity. Salisbury Township rapidly prospered during its early years becoming home to some of the most prominent families in Prince George's County including Beaumonts, Carpenters, Pultneys etc.. However due to economic problems associated with World War II many residents left their homes during this time period leaving behind extensive property damage including roads and streets that are still extant today such as Main Street which has been renamed Josephine street after Mrs. Beaumont’s daughter Josephine who lived locally for many years before moving away following her husband’s death). During World War II many veterans returning home found employment opportunities here including those working at Navy Yard across York Road; truck drivers working along US 1; military workers stationed at Fort Belvoir; local pilots/bombardiers flying missions over Nazi Germany etc.. However much like other places throughout Maryland these jobs eventually closed down during wartime shortages caused by shortages within both government and industry alike making salvember one of hardest hit municipalities economically speaking . Today despite limited commercial development or job opportunities many residents remain active within local churches etcetera keeping morale high while enjoying access to all thatsalimore has to offer including beautiful downtown square complete with statue honoring General Robert E Lee surrounded by impressive Lady Liberty Park giving rise once again nickname “the city without walls” thanks largely to several hundred volunteer firefighters who have kept this vital community safe every year since 2001
