Salisbury, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is the largest town in Prince George's County by land area and it also has the smallest population size of any incorporated municipality in Maryland. Founded in 1795 as part of Frederick County, Salisbury became a separate county on February 3, 1821. It was renamed for King George III after his coronation in 1837. The town was platted in 1800 and named for John Salisbury (1735-1810), an ancestor of Nicholas de Montresor (1685-1755). The first post office opened in Salisbury on July 1, 1800. The present courthouse was built in 1903 and replaced an earlier building that had been destroyed by fire. In 1948, the town annexed nearby Williamsburg to its boundaries. On May 15th of that year, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a lower court decision which stated that Prince George's County could not annex Williamsburg because it did not have jurisdiction over the boroughs located within its borders beyond what were specifically granted to it under state statute (i.e., such as roads and taxes). In 1951, when Prince George's County was created from parts of Frederick and Montgomery CountiesSalisbury became one of its six original municipalities along with Bowie Township (now Bowie) and Hagerstown Township (now Harford County). In 1957-58 Prince Georges eliminated three rural townships from its boundaries - New Hampshirevillage near Columbia Center; West Springfield Village; Andover Village - making Salisbury one of only two incorporated municipalities remaining within the new county system following its establishment then; all other municipalities had been abolished prior to Confederation being ratified on January 1st 1867 under Ulysses S Grant’s Executive Order No 10 “Annexing certain Territories into Our Dominion” . On October 1st 1960 voters approved a proposition providing for annexation by Arbutus Borough due to concerns about potential competition from neighboring Bowie Township over access to water resources among other factors considered during annexation consideration including revenue generated from gasoline sales tax currently levied on Arbutus residents while residing within Bowie Township
