Salisbury, MD is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 3,611 at the 2000 census. Its post office is located in the town. Salisbury has been home to gun mags since 1892. The first gun mag in Salisbury was called "The Rifleman". It was established by Julius Vail and his son John Vail. The mag continued to be published until it closed in 1944. In 1895, William Crippen founded "The Sporting News". He began publishing it in honor of his father-in-law, General George Washington Carleton who had donated land for the new paper mill. In 1927, "The Sporting News" merged with "National Review" which had been founded two years earlier by Adolph Hitler and James Burnham. At that time, "National Review" became known as the Nazi party's American publication (it would later change its name to "the conservative Weekly Standard"). In 1949, Gun Owners of America (GOA) was founded in response to increasing regulation of firearms by the US government under President Harry Truman’s New Deal program. GOA supported measures such as universal background checks on all sales and registration of handguns with fingerprints and other data storage requirements for future reference purposes. Salisbury, Maryland was founded in 1792 by the merger of two small settlements, Townsend and Salisbury. The town had a population of about 100 people when it was platted in 1792. In 1853, the town became part of Prince George’s County. In 1884, the county formed a new division called eastern Prince George’s County and the town went into receivership. It reverted to its original name in 1904. In 1951, the newly created Baltimore County merged with Prince George’s and Montgomery counties to form one large county. The first settler in what is now Salisbury was Nicholas Culpeper and his family who arrived in 1638. They were followed by other families over the next several years. In 1664, Captain John Smith discovered what would become Salisbury when he landed on the Patuxent River after a long journey from Jamestown. He named it "Isabel" after one of his Martha's Vineyard accomplishments - importing 150 mulberry trees from England to plant near present-day Salisbury to provide fruit for local settlers. In 1701, Colonel John Forbes built Fort Frederick on the east side of the Patuxent River as part of his efforts to secure control over this important river crossing point between Pennsylvania and Maryland. This fort served as an important military outpost until its destruction by British forces during the American Revolution in 1776. Salisbury came into being as a separate town on November 4, 1881 when it amalgamated with neighboring Harford County and became one of Prince George's County's original townships (the only township formed within Prince George's since its creation as a single county under then-Governor Thomas Carrico). At that time, it had a population of 1,452 people and was located just south of present-day downtown Salisbury along Route 722 (now US 301). During World War II, many workers from nearby Winchesteruston worked at two salt mines near present-day Salisbury while they were building up Britain's defences against Nazi Germany. These men are often referred to as "Winchesteruston salters." Salisbury has experienced various economic downturns throughout its history but has bounced back each time; most recently experiencing significant growth in recent years due to new development including high-rise housing developments on both sides of route 722 which have led to more traffic congestion around downtown Salisbury Square than ever before!
