The town is located on the Salisbury River and includes parts of the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area. The present-day town of Salisbury was first settled in 1792 by Revolutionary War veterans who had been captured at Yorktown. It was named for John Salisbury, 1st Viscount salisbury (1701-1768), an English nobleman and statesman. In 1848, part of what is now Salisbury became separate from Prince George's County and joined the newly formed Washington Township in Montgomery County. In 1871, it seceded from Montgomery County to form its own independent municipality known as "Salisbury." The townsite of present-day Salisbury was first surveyed in 1792 by Captain David Westfall while he served as military commander of British troops during the American Revolution. At that time, land along the riverbank lay within present-day Prince George's and Montgomery counties but because of lack of roads or settlementsidemarketing itself as "Salisburgh," it didn't become part of either county until 1848 when it united with Washington Township to form Prince George's County. Although development around the town began shortly after its incorporation into government there wasn't much progress made until after World War II when citizens started using their new found abilities to improve transportation links between downtown Baltimore and various outlying areas such as Westminster and Cumberland valleys through building bridges over then unnamed branches of the river which still flow through today's village center including Main Street bridge across the river near where Interstate 95 exits). This also led to increased traffic congestion on local streets which caused many businesses to close their doors during peak hours; however this did not stop people from trying to come together in spirit or name their community something creative like "Creative Arts Village" or simply call it simply "Town". It is part of the Washington–Baltimore– Northern Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Salisbury was first settled in 1768 by farmers from Northampton County, Pennsylvania and was incorporated as a town on July 1, 1853. The original townsite included present-day Salisbury Heights and parts of what are now Bowie and Frederick counties. The land that became Salisbury was originally part of three large tracts owned by Colonel John Smith of Kensington Township (now Bowie) in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. On October 3, 1768, Smith sold to James Prentice easternmost piece of his tract including present-day Salisbury Heights for £200 sterling ($2700). This sale marked the beginning of what would be an extensive land acquisition by the Prentice family which would include much of central Prince George's County over the next hundred years. In 1836, businessman Thomas Hicks donated 160 acres (65 hectares) to the town for use as a public square and courthouse complex; this donation remains one of its most important assets today. In 1876, General Nathaniel Banks donated $10 000 to help build a new school building for the town; this gift still helps support local education today. The banks also contributed money towards purchasing two lots adjoining General Banks' home for use as an extension to the common schools in1876-77 which later became known as "Banks Park". In 1907-08 alone, Salisbury contributed over $2 000 towards construction costs associated with expanding downtown into modern day form - this included erecting four brick buildings on Main Street which currently house various businesses including law offices and restaurants/bars/bars and restaurants respectively. On January 14th 1897, President Grover Cleveland delivered his inaugural speech from Independence Hall in Philadelphia before travelling north along I-95 Estuary to give speeches at several small towns along Route 439 before arriving in Baltimore on January 25th - this visit represented something very special for both America's capital city and its rural neighbor - it was also Ridgefield's first time being directly impacted by presidential visits since being chartered as a borough within Baltimore City more than fifty years earlier! In 1934 during Prohibition era Prohibition Enforcement Commission agents raided numerous saloons throughout Prince Georges County resulting in eleven convictions including that of then Sheriff William Hengebach – who after pleading guilty served fifteen months incarceration followed by five year probation upon release! There have been many other notable events associated with Salisbery such as when local politicians met together to discuss developing new commercial properties near Bowie Lakefront Stadium during 2002 summer Olympics; or when developer Larry Levy purchased seventy acres (29 hectares) adjacent to Interstate 95 eastbound lanes across from US 301 southbound interchange just north of Andover Road – this property would become known as "Salisbery Meadows" later becoming one of Maryland's largest suburban development projects ever completed!
