Salisbury is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,948 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area. Salisbury was founded in 1814 as an agricultural community on the Potomac River by refugees from West Point Academy, then one of the most prestigious private schools in America. The town grew rapidly due to its location and its heavy reliance on agriculture for revenue and employment. By 1870, Salisbury had become one of the largest towns in Prince George's County with over 12,000 residents. modest beginnings In 1814 when American forces landed at Fortress Monroe to take control of North America after the War of 1812, many refugees from West Point Academy were among them. Many people who had fled school were nowadult men making their way in many cases under difficult circumstances as soldiers led a charges against Native Americans throughout what would become known as "The American Revolution". These men were eager for any opportunity to start anew and so they set out for new opportunities which included moving from New York City where they had been raised and lived before arriving northward onto newly acquired land that lay between Baltimore and Washington D.C.. On July 25th, 1814 about 60 men came ashore wearing blue coats carrying bags filled with food that they had taken with them on their voyage across open ocean; these men disembarked near present day Salisbury along with other American forces occupying Fort Monroe during what became known as The Invasion of Fredericktown (later renamed Fort McHenry). As soon as they arrived there began trading back and forth between this new community and Jamestown downriver including shipments of corn flour salt pork soap powder etc., some items never having seen before or even imagined possible just a short while ago! Even today remnants can still be found all around town- such as an old stone wall built by early settlers which still surrounds much evidence left behind by those earlier days! One thing that cannot be disputed however is that this all started because very soon thereafter Englishmen started coming into this newly formed town looking for work to help support themselves since agriculture was no longer providing sustainable income like it once did! And so it would go on until 1865 when Johns Hopkins University moved into nearby Talbot Square creating an entirely new neighborhood within only a few blocks of where present day Salsey stands! At this time the town increased its population by leaps and bounds but not without some controversy too- especially given how quickly things changed following Hopkins arrival! Rapid growth & gentrification Though prosperity continued to follow Johns Hopkins presence until 1975 when construction began on nearby National Institutes of Health campus completely changing everything around here – largely thanks to money generated through NIH research projects – much remains exactly how it always has been: quiet streets full of farm animals grazing; beautiful churches perched atop hilltops overlooking downtown; small businesses lining Main Street selling everything from books to gasoline;ATTENTION GIRLS: Make sure you stop by our local grocery store named Smith & Wesson located just off US 301 after dark!! salisbury microbrewery A&W Brewery
