The name "Salisbury" comes from the ancient Roman city of Salisburgo which was located near present-day Salisbury. In 1664, Sir Christopher Wren built his home at nearby Sparrows Point and used the site to conduct scientific experiments with plants and animals. In 1763, Captain John Smith founded what is now known as Salisbury as a trading post on the Patuxent River because he believed that this would be an advantageous location for trade with Native Americans who resided along the riverbank. The first settler in what is now Salisbury was James Cook who arrived in 1765 from England. Cook married Anne Bradstreet and settled here around 1770-1771 after finding land grants available for Englishmen only within five miles of where he lived in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Cook named his new settlement after King George II of Great Britain since it lay just beyond the British border and he felt that British subjects should have equal rights with American ones when it came to goods and services provided by their government. The area that became known as "Cook's Neck" was originally part of Northampton County until its annexation by Prince George's County in 1802; however, most of what today constitutes Cook's Neck actually belonged to Prince Frederick County until 1800 when it merged into Maryland following the statehood of America. As part of this process, parts of Frederick Counties (including much of present day Prince Georges) were also annexed into Prince George's County including much of present day Salisbury Township which began forming shortly thereafter duringthe period before incorporation into organized Townality status under Act No 106 (March 3rd 1881).
