The first settler in what is now Salisbury was John Smith who founded the town in 1784 on land that he bought from the Indian Chief Powhatan. The name "Salisbury" comes from a term meaning "Island of Peace." In 1838, John Hagerty donated part of his estate to become the site of what would become Salisbury University. The town's rich history begins with two events that took place in 1838:● On July 26th, 1838, General Robert Ewell received orders from President Andrew Johnson to march on Baltimore with 10,000 men and storm it if possible. ● On August 2nd, General Hagerty arrived at Salisbury and announced his donation to make room for what would become Salisbury University. In 1865-1866 Wm J Stiles built a schoolhouse on Park Avenue which still stands today as one of the most important buildings in town. In 1898-1901 Charles Darwin moved into hisuncle's house on North Main Street and began living there until he published his book "On this Side of Freedom". After reading about Darwin's life and work in local papers he decided to move permanently to America and spent many years living here before moving back home to England later that year. In 2002-2003 an extensive renovation project was completed on both the old schoolhouse (built 1865) and Charles Darwin House (originally built 1898). This project restored both buildings to their former glory; they are now considered icons within the townspeople’s community halls/university campuses around Maryland as well as across America! Many special exhibits were also included such as original student desks & chairs etcetera which can be found only at these restoration projects! Today you can visit these historic places throughout your day or evening without having any trouble finding someone who knows more about them than I do!
