Salisbury is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 6,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. Salisbury is known for its annual May Day parade and its being home to the Salisbury School of Business. The first documented reference to what are now Salisbury and neighboring towns came from two men who were exploring the area in 1608 when they named a large body of water "Wasp Creek" after one of their natural enemies. In 1734, John Thornton erected a log cabin in present-day Salisbury Township which became his home until he died in 1768. In 1802, Joshua Fryer built a small grist mill on what is now Main Street in present day Salisbury Township. By 1825, mills had been started by local farmers on the west banks of Hagerstown River where it flows into Wasp Creek – these mills produced flour, paper and other products for local consumption and export to Europe. By 1890 there were twentyfive mills operating in Prince George's County; seven of these were located within present day Salshire township (now part of Northern Maryland). A post office called "Salisbury" was established in 1824, but no mail arrived until 1830 because Postmasters John Davenport and James Cranch did not believe that telegraph technology would be developed until much later. The first telephone installation took place here in 1907 with Samuel Morse receiving phone calls from Baltimore through an underground line from this location up through Old Town into downtown Baltimore! In 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman burned down three homes adjacent to today's Main Street east of US Route 506 as part of an effort to move Confederate troops away from Fredericktown during the American Civil War; this destroyed most buildings within five miles (8 km) radius around Fredericktown so that no evidence remained which could have been used as targets by Union forces seeking revenge for this attack. Salisbury is located on the Eastern Shore ofMaryland and is bordered by Harford County to the north and west, Anne Arundel County to the east, and Calvert County to the south. The first people who lived in what is now Salisbury were Native Americans. Potters from Kentuckiana came overland in wagons during the early 1800s and started trading with local tribes. In 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote "TheStar-Spangled Banner" in nearby Georgetown while stationed at Fort McHenry. The song was later sung at American battles such as Gettysburg and Chickamauga. Salisbury was founded by Nicholas Gibbs in 1795 as a stop on his journey from Mount Vernon to West Point. He named it after his friend Sir John Salterston (1685–1748). In 1801, General Washington visited Salisbury while on his way home from treating an illness in Frederick County; he met local landowners there who invited him to visit them again soon. On July 7 of that year, Washington signed a document naming Salisbury "the capital ofPrinceGeorge's county." In 1835, John Harkness built himself a house near where he now lives for use as a hotel when visiting Prince George's County seat of Hanover Heights during his presidency of that county (). Harkness donated land for University Park which would eventually be renamed Maryland State University after him in 1912 (). In 1865, Salisbury became part of Prince George's County when it was created from parts of Hanover Heights and Baltimore City; its citizens voted unanimously to adopt the new name (). On October 15th of that year residents elected J C Crispin mayor after only four ballots (). Crispin served until 1889 when he resigned due to poor health; his replacement Cyrus McCormick served until 1897(). In 1937 – 1938 King Philip II of Spain made an official visit to America and traveled through Prince George's County including stops at Johns Hopkins Hospital (then known as Hopkins Medical School) and Northern Lights Casino (); this event helped spur development around Maryland Naval Station Norfolk () which opened its doors that same year.
