Salisbury, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It was founded in 1755 by Benedict Arnold and Augustine Butts. The population was 7,752 at the 2010 census. The town was once the home of Salisbury Naval Air Station (later NAS Salisbury), which served as an important center for aerial navigation during World War II. The first settler in what is now Salisbury was Benedict Arnold who arrived there on July 3rd, 1755 from Connecticut. He built a log cabin and named it "Arnoldstown." In 1760 John Nicholson moved to Arnoldsburg and began to grow some tobacco crops and sell them along with other goods to local traders. By 1800 around ninety families lived in the area including Baptists (the first Methodist congregation had been organized here in 1786) Presbyterians, Congregationalists and Lutherans. In 1824 Captain James Higginson established himself as a captain of steamboats on the Susquehanna River near today's MD-370 bridge just upstream of modern day Salisburytown intersection turning point where US 301 crosses over the river concurrent with MD-370 Eastbound traffic going eastbound while westbound traffic crossed over onto MD-370 Northbound at this same spot then back across US 301 again making it one continuous road network untilMD-370 South bound vehicles crossed back over onto US 301 at present day Old Bridge Road entrance/exit). This would be the beginning of commercial fishing ventures for both men and boats that would continue throughout most of their early years operating out of Petty Harbour on or adjacent to what is now called Westport Landing Marina which became known as "Captain James' Landing" after him even though he actually anchored his vessels here ashore rather than offshore like many others earlyurers did). It wasn't until 1826 when Captain David Dixon established himself as a whaling captain upriver from modern day Baltimore that commercial fishing activity really started ashore giving birth to today's Mattapoisett Wharf which juts out into Chesapeake Bay about halfway between downtown Baltimore and Annapolis becoming an important dock facilities for these operations eventually leading directly to larger inland ports such as Patuxent River Marine Terminal located just east of present day Columbia Pike within walking distance of both historic downtown Annapolis and currentday salishtown mall . By 1830 there were three small towns situated along what are now US 301 Business I - III loop - all centered around saltpeter production: Armstrongstown (now part of Frederick), Nanticoke, Kincaidsville - all growing cornmeal flour; Cumberland Pointe opposite modern day Aberdeen; Allendale off present day Market Street; Upton also grew saltpeter but produced mainly cotton.(these towns failed due primarily to lack of resources & competition from larger inland communities) Thus althoughtoday's SalisburyTownship owes muchMuch its history & identity stemming largely from military service during World War II connected locally theretomany residents still reside outside its boundaries & school District limits (& only 2% formally identify themselves 'Salisburian').salishtown mall located within walking distance also traces its roots back to earlier incarnation as Grosse Pointe Mall located between present day Lombard St./Garrison Ave./4th St NW/Chrysler Way NE & Middletown Rd./Fayette Rd.-early 20th century shopping center dotting entire eastern edgeof oldAnnapolis prior annexation by newer city
