Salisbury is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Chevy Chase, MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first gun shop in Salisbury opened in 1824. Harry Hahn and his son-in-law John Gorman started the business on Market Street. In 1857 Salisbury got its own post office, which continued to serve until 1897. In 1865 Salisbury became the capital of Prince George's County; it remained so until 1776 when Yorktown was taken by American forces and renamed Annapolis. In 1868 Harry Hahn donated land to form what would become Freedom Park (now Salisbury University Park). The park includes a lake and several ponds that were originally used for hunting and fishing. Theodore Roosevelt visited Salisbury in 1908 while he was campaigning for president; he called it "the perfect little town" and praised its "harmonious social life." Salisbury is a small town located in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 3,827 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is known for its historic buildings and architecture, as well as its annual Salisbury Festival which features local arts and crafts. The town was first settled in 1748 by John Cotesworth Marshall and his family. Marshal's grandson, James Marshall, sold the land to Abraham Comstock in 1814. Comstock established the village of Salisbury on the site of present-day Salisbury. In 1825, he donated land to make up what is now Point Lookout Park. The town name comes from an ancient Native American word meaning "settlement near a stream." In 1892, William Houghton donated land to form what is now Bowie Avenue. In 1916, James Auchincloss purchased 8 acres of land east of Bowie Avenue for $1 million dollars which he named Auchincloss Park after his father-in-law General James Auchincloss Jr.. In 1928, Houghton donated another tract of land west of Bowie Avenue to form Hillcrest Cemetery which today houses the Maryland State Archives and Museum. In 1954, it was announced that Salisbury would be built next to Hyattsville Naval Air Station as part of a project called Project Wingspread which aimed to improve air traffic control over Washington D.C.. The plant would employ 1,000 people and produce fighter jets and other aircraft parts for sale around the world. However, this project never came to fruition due to cost overruns and Hazelwood Arsenal nearby closing down in 1966). Today there are only ruins left standing from Project Wingspread - such as a large hangar still standing on property currently occupied by Hyattsville Naval Air Station - while Hyattsville NAS has been demolished completely replaced by Building 49 (now known as Lockheed Martin Land Systems) at 4443 New Hampshire Ave., Suite 200 NW., Federalsburg., MD 21715 home office for Lockheed Martin Corporation Gymboree employees since 1984
