Rockville is home to the Rockville Arsenal, which was built in 1795. It was used as a munitions plant until 1958 and now houses a museum that tells the story of gun safety in Rockville. On October 27, 1967, the U.S. Department of Defense's Rockville Arsenal opened for business with its new state-of-the-art shooting ranges. The arsenal is home to the Army Ballistic Missile Agency's Fire Control Center and parts of the National Security Agency's Tailored Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Directorate (TISR).
Rockville is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 14,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington metropolitan area. The town was founded by European colonists in 1792 as "Round Hill", after a hill in that name near modern-day Rockville Centre. In 1785, the first permanent African American family arrived in Rockville, Maryland when John Sellers and his wife, Sarah, moved from Virginia. The Sellerses were among the first black families to reside in what is now Bethesda Township. AsRockville grew and diversified, so too did its African American community. In 1892, Dr. Samuel Mays founded the Washington University School of Medicine in Rockville and many of Rockville's prominent residents - such as Frederick Douglass - benefited from his work. The school also became a center for social justice and activism throughout the 20th century.
