After Maryland seceded from the United States on July 1st, 1861 (following a petition by 11 Maryland counties), Rockville remained within federal government jurisdiction until 1862 when it again became part of Prince George's County under new statutes passed by Congress following the battle at Manassas which had effectively ended hostilities in Virginia

In 1821, Wilson served as ambassador to Russia and negotiated the Treaty of Williamsburg, which signified Maryland's formal entry into the United States. One of Rockville's most famous residents was President Abraham Lincoln, who spent many years living here before moving to Springfield, Illinois in 1864. In Rockville's centennial year,2011-12, much celebration took place including a parade down I-495 from Laurel Heights to downtown Rockville where several events were held including a proclamation from then-Mayor Tommy Battle condemning rocketry as a threat to public safety
