Polk approved a land grant for John Fenton in Frederick County (now known as Bowie), he recommended that it be given to Captain Isaac Hillyer who had fought with him against Santa Anna during the Mexican-American War. Hillyer married Sarah Goodspeed (died 1854) of nearby Lanham Township and moved into what is now Rockville in 1824 with his new family. Rockville started as a farming community with about 100 acres (40 hectares) of land irrigated by canals running through it. The first store opened in 1870; one of its founders was Elijah Hicks Sr., father of Elijah Hicks Jr., also a local resident and Congressman from Maryland during World War II. In 1886–87 there was a three-month drought that caused water levels in many reservoirs around Maryland to drop so low that communities alongsIver went dry including Cumberland City which lost almost all its residents because no one could get food or water from any source other than rivers or wells until late fall or early winter! In response to this problem merchants throughout Maryland began selling prepared foods such as jams, jellies and chutneys from horseback packages called "canned goods." One result was increased demand for cattle feed due to dwindling production due to overgrazing by farmers throughout North America which helped increase prices for corn and other crops; these factors are believed also to have been responsible for helping create Baltimore's reputation as a leading manufacturing center during this time period although Iron Bridge Road still remains one of Baltimore's most important thoroughfares today despite losing most of its businesses when Interstate 95 came along 60 years later!
