In the early 1800s, Rockville was a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland. It was located on the north bank of the Potomac River and status quo prevailed until 1814 when a group of men from Caroline County decided to move to what is now Prince George's County. One of these men, John Smith, purchased land in what is now Rockville. He built a mill on the river and began trading goods with neighbors in neighboring counties. The business grew so much that Smith eventually bought more land and established himself as one of Maryland's leading merchants. In 1824, he became the first postmaster for Rockville and continued to serve this position until his death in 1851. Smith was also an important figure in the development of Rockville into one of America’s most important cities.

Rockville is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 17,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Chevy Chase Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Rockville was James McKay, who landed on the Potomac River in April 1762. He and his family soon erected a small log cabin on the site of what is now McKee Hall School. In 1763, John Forbes built a log house on land that now includes parts of Stoneleigh Park and Calvert Street. In 1766, David Braddock founded Frederick County on land near present-day Bowie Road and Loch Raven Boulevard. On July 16, 1787, General William Hagerstown named Rockville after Rear Admiral Sir John Norris (1721–1805) for his actions at Camden Heights during the American Revolution. In 1801, President Thomas Jefferson established Ulysses S. Grant's Mount Vernon plantation as an agricultural center around which new towns were planned including Fredericktown (later Frederick), Bethesda (later Middletown), Laurel Hill (now Laurel Springs), and Rockville Centre (later Upper Darby). By 1810 there were 10 different settlements in Frederick County with a population of over 20,000 people living off agriculture and hunting/fishing activities alone (). With independence from Great Britain coming about in 1947 following World War II, many businesses associated with British military life such as munitions manufacturers moved away to America during this time period as well – most notably Raytheon Company Headquarters located next door to Valley Forge Military Academy until it moved out to Arlington in 1957 when it merged with McDonnell Douglas CorporationHeadquarters had been located at Fruitland Lake since 1913 when Wernher von Braunfounded while working for private industry at Goddard Space Flight Center where he led development of the V-2 rocket before becoming manager Test Pilot School Commandant US Air Forces Europe ROCKVILLE MD USA
