That day, a small party of Americans under the command of Captain John Smith fired a cannon from Fort Frederick to celebrate Independence Day. In 1865, the Union army moved into Rockville from Washington D.C., and started an artillery battle against Confederate forces entrenched at Bull Run Bridge. After that battle, all Confederate cannons were melted down and used for metalworking purposes within Rockville during Reconstruction times. In 1861, Daniel Webster became the Ulysses S Grant’s running mate for Ulysses S. Grant’s successful run for president against Abraham Lincoln. As president, Grant visited Rockville more times than any other city during his term; he even stayed at one time at Fenton’s mill! Lyon continued to operate his store until 1914 when it burned down; however, his successors managed to keep business going until 1984 when it closed its doors forever after serving customers through those years online only!
