Rockville was established by British colonists in 1795 as a small farming community on an area now bounded by Prince George's and Montgomery counties. The first permanent settler was John Nicholson. In 1811, Colonel Lewis Morgan purchased land east of Rockville from Nicholson for $2,000 and began to develop it into a bedroom community for the eastern suburbs of Baltimore. In 1814, the town was renamed Rockville after General Robert Ewell during the War of 1812 while still under British rule. By 1830, Rockville had become one of the largest towns in Maryland with a population over 10,000 people. After being locally governed until 1935 when it became part of Prince George's County as part of its organized government system under statehood, Rockville became an incorporated town on December 12th 1931 with a population over 25,000 people
Rockville was founded in 1734 by the brothers George and John Rock. The town was named for the castlerock, a strategic mountain that dominated the area. The first settlers were farmers who began to arrive in what is now Rockville in 1738. By 1800, there were over 100 residents in Rockville. In 1814, Washington County was created from parts of Prince Georges and Montgomery counties, and Rockville became a part of that county. In 1847, the population of Rockville reached 1,500 people. That year, Congress passed an act creating Montgomery County as a separate county with its own government and judicial system. The Act also gave Rockville township land north of White Marsh Road to form the nucleus of what is now Bethesda Township. In 1871, Congress authorized the construction of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad between Frederick and Washington Counties. This railroad would provide access to markets beyond Potomac River Valley towns like College Park and Germantown; this would benefit Rockville directly as well as surrounding communities such as Takoma Park and Lanham Township. Construction on the rail line began in 1870 but did not reach its completion until 1875 due to a variety of difficulties including problems with funding, engineering challenges along the route, and competition from other transportation projects around Maryland at that time. The town's growth continued during this time with new housing developments being built on both sides of White Marsh Road while businesses expanded into what is now Middleton Elementary School and West High School neighborhoods east of White Marsh Road (now called Lansdowne). By 1910-1911, there were over 2,000 residents living in rockVILLE according to census data. During World War I (1918-1921), many local businesses contributed their resources towards military service; these include purchasing supplies for soldiers barracks near Greenbelt Creek which later became known as Camp Muirhead outside present day Silver Spring . After World War I ended however, many jobs unable to be found locally returned home so residents vacated their homes leaving behind business losses associated with war-time depreciation values for properties valued at $5 or less per acre . Many businesses reopened after peace came though but encountered shortages of key materials needed for operations such as nails , bricks etcetera
