Railroads came through New Carrollton and traffic increased so much that businesses built rail terminals on Idlewild Road and other nearby streets. By 1920, business had grown so much that mills had been erected along Main Street between Oneida Avenue and Bowie Street; these mills made flour, cottonseed oil, paper products, shoes etc.. In 1922, AGO ( Arlington Heights Good Roads Organization) became one of the first organizations in America to promote heavy truck traffic on local roads by organizing rallies against truckers who were damaging our countryside with their brakes or horns while driving down residential streets during rush hours
