In 1892, Nicholas-Jacques Conte opened his business, Conte's Optical Store, in what is now the alley between York and Washington Streets. The store specialized in selling optical supplies and equipment to businesses and individuals. In 1912, the first post office in New Carrollton was established at 20th and York Streets. The store continued to sell optical goods until it closed in 1967. In 1978, the original building on 20th Street was purchased by AFSO (American Family Services Organization), which used it as an office for over 25 years. That building was demolished in 2007 and replaced with a new structure that contains a variety of retail space including an optometric clinic, health food store, and Leger Glasses & Optics Inc., which is one of the oldest private eye businesses in Maryland.
New Carrollton, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 6,972 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1792 as part of Washington's original land grant to the nation. It became an incorporated town in 1821 and a city in 1961. New Carrollton is located at (38.469811, -76.764847). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 7,542 people, 3,898 households, and 2,568 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,969 people per square mile (706/km²). There were 4,513 housing units at an average density of 853 per square mile (342/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White and 2% African American. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 0%. There were 3,898 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them,[2] 60% were married couples living together,[3] 9% had a female householder with no husband present,[4] and 24% were non-families. 20% of all households were made up of individuals and 5% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. This lens allowed users to view small images more clearly by dispersing them over a larger area within their eye than if they used magnifying glasses or opera glasses alone. In 1937, American Optical Company began producing eyeglasses with two arms that crossed in front of the user's nose for greater comfort and easier reading. By this time, eyeglasses were being marketed primarily as sunglasses rather than justoculars like they were ten years earlier. However, due to technological advancements during World War II,Eyeglasses began becoming more important military equipment than ever before due to their ability to improve battlefield optics and visibility from long distances away from friendly forces. During World War IIEyeglasses also became increasingly popular among movie industry stars because they could now be worn outdoors without fatiguing oneself
In 1954, photojournalist Irving Penniman took a picture of the world’s first self-cleaning mirror. The camera used an electronic shutter to take pictures of the mirror as it cleaned itself. After printing and distributing the photos, Penniman discovered that his camera had been damaged in transit so he replaced it with a new one.
New Carrollton was once a thriving community located in Frederick County, Maryland. At its peak, the population of New Carrollton was over 10,000 residents and it enjoyed a very active cultural life. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1814 and quickly became known for its fine architecture and prosperous businesses. However, the town’s fortunes changed after the American Civil War began. Many of the original German settlers were quickly replaced by English-speaking Americans and their replacement created a tension that led to violence and social unrest. The town eventually disbanded following the war and most of its residents moved away. However, some of New Carrollton’s legacy remain today: It is home to one of America’s largest concentrations of ethnic Germans (more than 100%), as well as several popular cultural institutions such as the New Carrollton Symphony Orchestra and Fine Arts Center.
New Carrollton was founded in 1792 as a small settlement on the east bank of the Patuxent River. It grew rapidly, becoming one of the most important towns in Maryland during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. New Carrollton was destroyed by fire in 1864, but quickly rebuilt. The town continued to grow throughout the 20th century, and today it is one of the most vibrant and successful communities in central Maryland.
