New Carrollton is a city in western Maryland, on the Potomac River. The population was 25,824 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Montgomery County after Silver Spring. New Carrollton is located about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Washington D.C., and about 30 miles (48 km) east of Baltimore. The community began as an agricultural village on the north bank of the Potomac River, near present-day Silver Spring. In 1864, Colonel George Meade founded what became New Carrollton as a planned town with streets named for prominent citizens of Montgomery County: Meade Street, Howard Street, Lafayette Avenue, and Park Avenue. As one of America's first streetcar suburbs, New Carrollton saw rapid growth between 1900 and 1930; it had over 100 streetcar lines at its peak! In 1951–1954, when Interstate 95 was built just west of town limits – completing what had been envisioned as a master plan for suburban development – many new construction jobs were created in downtown New Carrollton thanks to Interstate 95's mainline alignment through town center between I-695 and I-495 (now known as US 1). On July 1, 1800, the United States acquired vast amounts of land in what is now Maryland. President James K. Polk sent surveyors out to purchase land in what is now New Carrollton and on July 1, 1800, the area became part of the United States. The town was named for General George Washington's presidential home at Mount Vernon and it grew rapidly due to its location near the Potomac River. By 1825, large parts of New Carrollton had become a telegraph center and by 1830, there were three churches in town. In 1834, a school was built and in 1840, a courthouse and jail were constructed. In 1846, the first post office was established in town. By 1870, New Carrollton had a population of over 2200 people and by 1880 it had reached 4500 people. Between 1900-1920, new construction increased the size of the town by about 50%. During World War II (1939-1945), New Carrollton became an important military base as it served as headquarters for Army units stationed in Northern Virginia.
